Hi Carolyn,

Welcome! A week from now, you will be banded. A week ago I got my band. I've got to say that it was not nearly as traumatic as I had thought it might be. I was not very nervous at all. Everything went smoothly and now, a week later, I am ready for my post-op visit to the surgeon on Thursday. Looking forward to "eating" more than just Clear Liquids - my surgeon requires continued diet on "full" liquids for awhile longer - he's conservative and I appreciate that although I am looking forward to adding in some more exciting things.... What questions do you have? Ask away!

Hi Carolyn: Ask away. What type of support do you need. Questions for what is happening now or may occur in the future. I am 65 and our problems may be similar.

OK. I have a question. I was doing real well. NOt much pain. Getting around just fine. Yesterday (one week after surgery) my two large incisions started to hurt when I move. It feels like they are pulling. It is a different kind of pain than before - more localized. Yes, a pulling sensation. Itchy, too. Is this normal? I assume it is. Not excruciating pain, just annoying. I want to be done with this now!! More whine, anyone? Your thoughts? thanks margie

Thanks for the replies. I go to my hospital pre-op and nutrionists tomorrow. After that everything is completed. Just waiting for the 30th. Obviously a little nervous about the surgery. I don't like anesthesia Hate to lose control. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions after surgery, but right now I just wanted to be sure there were individuals out there to talk with.

Thanks - Carolyn

Hi Margie,

I was banded in June and I remember a bit of burning/itching.... I called my doctor and they told me it was normal. I saw him within a few days of the call and the examination proved everything was fine. I was lucky. I would suggest you call your doctor to be sure your itching is ok....Only your doctor can be sure, and it never hurts to check. Good luck!

Nancy,

Thanks for the reply!! I saw the surgeon today and he said everything is great, no problems at all. On to the next diet phase - full liquids. oh, yummy. But a step better than clear liquids! Thanks.

That's great news, Margie. My stick blender became my best friend during full liquids--haha. Most anything (especially homemade soups) can be blended to make something yummy and nutritious. Keep up all the good work!

I bought a "Magic Bullet" for the mushie stage and it was great... still use it, especially after a fill.

Magic Bullet....I'll have to look for that. I know that this week will pass and I'll be on mushies before I know it. Sometimes I don't think I have any restriction - can't notice any - but as my friend Guy observed tonight, I've only had liquids so of course there's no restriction. And I am very afraid to test the limits so I will be good and really liquify everything this week....You know, so much of this was so very overwhelming before but it's beginning to become more clear now and I feel like I"m learning..

I think I will have my first fill soon. Those of you who have had fills please let me know if you had to go back on a liquid or soft diet after fills.

Doctors all vary, but most want you back on liquids at least 24 hrs, then mushy 24 hrs before back to normal regime.

My doctor recommends 48 hours of full liquids after a fill, then he suggests a bit of caution for a few days (till we get used to the newly filled band and how it will react to food). Works great for me....

I agree with Phyl....no such thing as too old! Also, I have had almost no problem with wrinkling (so far), and I have a LOT to lose. Slow weight loss with the band is probably helping with that issue.

Good luck to you both.

Nancy

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
