Hi all 60+ bandsters: I am considering the band at 62 years old. Thought maybe I was being foolish to do this....but glad to see so many others my age did it already. Did anyone have the sils procedure and how did you do after surgery. Did it take long to heal? Did anyone have a problem with blood clots. I heard about a young girl on this site who had blood clots to her lungs after surgery and it scared the Heck out of me. Would you all do it again if given the choice? Thanks for your replies. cat lady:confused:

CL. It's not a "foolish" thing. You're looking to improve your health. I'd do it again in a NY minute. I was 38 days shy of 63 when I had it done. No problems. Being retired, I don't remember how long the down time was. I do know I went to a wedding 15 days later.

Hi Cat Lady

I was 61 when I had Lap Band Surgery. I can't think of enough ways to tell you how glad I am that I had the surgery. My only regret is that I didn't have it sooner.

With any surgery there are risks, and only your doctor can really discuss how much risk there is to you.

I was in the hospital overnight, because I also had two hernias repaired. I was only off work for one week (desk job), and really only had one day that I didn't feel to good when I was home from the hospital.

I meet one lady that had the surgery who had many complications and spent a long time in the hospital; however, she says she would definately do it again. She couldn't work before because she was so overweight, and now she is back at work and really living again.

For me, it has made me so much more mobile. My back, hip, knees and ankles were so painful that I really stopped doing so many things that I used to enjoy. Now, I can do all those things and more. I feel at least 10 years younger! Now I am look forward to a much more active and enjoyable retirement.

Good luck with your decision. I think we all had the same concerns before surgery, so don't think that you are alone.

Hi: I had my band at 63. Flew to Toronto had the surgery, rested one day and flew home to Vancouver,BC with no problems. Had no gas, pain etc. My weight loss has been slow due to health issues but still I am loosing. The greatest part, off all - no longer on BP pills except diaretic, no longer on diabetic medicaton and have normal readings on all blood tests. Am walking better with less pain. If your doctor gives you the go ahead to have the band, I would not think twice. Best decision I have ever made when it comes to weight control.

Hi Karen & Doddie63: Thanks for your support and replies to my questions. It sure feels good knowing there are people my age with the same problems and concerns. I hope I get approved and have the "guts" to continue with the lap band surgery. I can't believe how much weight you guys have lost since the surgery. It is remarkable. I know for sure without the lapband it could not be done. Good Luck in the future and God Bless you. I figure if we have another 20 years to go why not live it to the fullest. Maybe it will help us live longer and better. cat lady

Oh Congratulations ...I have just made my appointment to see both the dietician and sugeon for 15th February...I am excited and a little afraid...afraid it won`t work for me ...I feel such a failiour not being able to just loose the weight myself by diet and excersize and I am sure some people/family think that too...

I am 62 on 11th February and I have thought about getting this done for nearly 18months now , whilst trying once again to loose the weight myself ...I just can`t do it...My knees/ankles and hips ache so bad when I walk I am hoping if I loose some weight straight up or whilst preparing for surgery it will get easier to excersize because it sure is hard now....

Glad I found some 60 plus people I felt a little old now I have a place of my own....

Nice to meet you all will keep you posted on my up coming banding and hope to read about other members my in this age bracket.....

Thanks Judy ...I go from being excited and keen to being scared and unsure ..all I know I can`t go on how I am any longer, this is my only hope left....

Its great to be able to read such possitive stories from people my age who have had success...

I hope in 6 months time I am telling everyone how great it is and I am sorry I didn`t have it done sooner...

Off to enjoy my Friday , have a good evening...

M.xx

Yea!!! Happy for you. Where are you having it done. I also live in KS.

I live in Overland Park and will have it done @ The Bariatric Center Off 435 & Nall. I'm 66 and feel I deserve a healthy, attractive body for the next 10+? years.

I understand that the band is a tool, and I'll have responsibility to make it work -- but I'm confident that if so many others can make the life adjustments necessary, I/we can do it too.

We deserve a great life. :) :sifone:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
