Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

My friend had a lap band in 11 months ago and has been having problems with her port since then, she has had infections that are difficult to treat and her wound has never healed up. She had the port changed to a smaller device and she now has two port sites both of which won't heal. She has been told that the infection she has now is "Stenotrophomonas Malthophilia" and I wonder if anyone has heard of this infection, and how is it treated and more importantly could it be due to her port, tubing or band. Any advice or knowledge about this matter would be appreciated.

S. maltophilia used to be called Pseudomonas maltophilia and it is not a common infection. If you google either you'll get more information than you care for.

It can be tough to treat and your friend may have to lose her port over it. Is she on antibiotics? This bug can be very resistant to antibiotics. I would suggest she see an infectious disease doc who knows how to treat stubborn infections.

Good luck to her!

Thanks for that, I did google it and your right it was too much info and not enough for a lay person. I have suggested to her that she talk to her doc about having the port removed until the infection finally cears up. She has had several courses of antibotics to no avail. Now that they know what they are dealing with (they recently did a swab to find out which infection it was) we are hopeful for a quick cure. Thanks for your help, I just wanted to know if anyone else was suffering or had suffered from this.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
