When to start exercising?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I've had the band about a week now. I feel fine but I know that my insides need to heal. When can I start exercising? And what can I do in the meantime?

Hi -

I'm interested in what they say too. I'm getting banded on 2/13 (just occurred to me it was the day before valentines day right now).

Anyway, I'm involved in a fitness class at the gym and while I want to heal well, I don't want to miss a lot of classes if I'm feeling just fine. Obviously, a little adjustments to the intensity would be good.

Walking on a treadmill is great almost from day one. But I waited to go back to Curves five weeks and to the YMCA seven weeks (and then it was too soon for the Y!)

As has been said in many threads, although the incisions outside look like they are healed, the muscles INSIDE have to totally heal too--and that takes a LONG TIME! At seven weeks, going back to weight training felt great the first three times I went--except for the severe pain I had in my side.

I was positive I had a hernia! At ten weeks I went back to the surgeon for a fill and discovered it was just my port I was feeling!! It is secured to muscle and I must've been pulling on it--so I waited another two weeks and went back last week--and now it feels much better! (AND I've adjusted my routine to accommodate for the port pulling).

So my best advice to you all is to just be patient... Walk on the treadmill all you want but working with weights must wait!! :)

I got the OK to exercise at 2 weeks post-op. I was told anything that didn't cause pain or discomfort would be OK. I started slowly with walking. At 2 weeks post-op, it was a bit uncomfortable, due to the fact you use your stomach muscles to walk (who knew?!). Then, a week later, I tried a little light weight training (arms, legs and shoulders only...no abs), and that felt great. At 3 1/2 weeks post-op, I went to my yoga class. There were parts of the class that were very uncomfortable, due to pain near the port. I adjusted as best as I could, and ended up enjoying the class.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
