how to boost metabolism

Recommended Posts

anyone have any tips on boosting metabolism? I was banded 10/2/06. I lost 100 pounds in a year. then I tried for one too many fills (some of you know what that means, yuk) so I had to have an unfill. I promptly regained twenty pounds and became angry and depressed. I have since had two fills and am where I need to be but the weight is not coming off very quickly. I am walking every day and hitting the gym three times a week but have only lost a couple pounds. I think my body has adjusted to eating less. I am tired and cold all the time. like I have gone into starvation/hibernation mode. are there any foods or supplements that will boost my metabolism? I really need to see some results as I'm scared the depression will return if I don't and I cannot fail. I've come too far, worked too hard and been through too much.

Yep - building muscle burns more calories just to exist. Also, I've heard that eating more small meals than just 3 helps increase the metabolism.

Change Up Your Exercise..sometimes Your Body Gets To Use To The Exercise And It Gets Efficient..it Won't Burn As Many Calories ...change It Up...walk Faster And Further...wear Weights On Your Legs...step It Up And You Will Probably Begin To See A Difference...

You might have your Vitamin levels checked. It kind of sounds like your Iron might be low (based only on my iron having been low at some point and being tired all the time).

Your doctor can request blood tests to make sure your Vitamin levels are OK. He/she would probably run a normal cbc first since vitamin tests can run into big bucks and insurance won't pay without some indication that something could be wrong.(a cbc will show the possibility of low iron)

My DH had gastric bypass and has to have vitamin levels checked because of the mal-absorption. He takes a handful of Vitamins a day and still can run into problems.

With the band we don't have trouble absorbing vitamins. Be sure to take a chewable multi vitamin and you should be fine.

As for being cold, there are lots of threads talking about being cold as the result of weight loss. I'm not cold yet, but hope to be once the summer heat begins!

Running five times a week for an hour works for me. I still find it incredible how much I can eat and still lose weight. And its built lots of muscle for me, which I guess is the key.

Further to what I said above, several times in my life I have been very fit and exercising intensely regularly for long periods of time, like 2 or 3 years.

When I'm in that zone, I absolutely do not put on weight. It wont make me actually lose weight without dieting but it makes weight maintenance something you dont even have to think about. You can get through Easter, Christmas, holidays, and periods of bad eating without gaining a gram.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
