How few calories are you taking in post-op?

Recommended Posts

Was just thinking that I'm supposed to go back to work on Monday and I bet I haven't even had 200 calories today. I'm guessing that once I'm trying to really think and work that this may be pretty tough.

How long did you/are you planning to be consuming so few calories?

It was easier to get the shakes and broth down at work, because I was drinking and sipping at my desk while working. When I am at home, I tend to gulp too fast. I write what I put in mouth down when I am at work, but don't when I am home. With the broth and the three shakes I was having while at work I was doing about 600 calories.

It's been 10 days since surgery and I've been averaging anywhere from 400-600 calories. I haven't been aiming to do that, it's just what it's ended up being. Did your doctors give you a guideline of how many calories we should be getting?

I started full liquids day 4 post-op. My typical day has been combinations of:

SlimFast Low-carb Protein shake: 190 cals (Always have this)

Baby food (pears, peaches, oatmeal and apples) 60 cals each 4oz.

chicken broth- 25 cals for 8oz

Cauliflower, Butternut squash and Tomato Soups made with skim milk (8 oz.= appx 150 cals, maybe a little less)

sugar free Jell-O pudding- 60-80 cals depending on if it's instant or ready made

My doc gave me the okay to try a very soft scrambled egg, which I ate about a 1/3 of (went down fine) but I'm going to wait a few more days to try it again along with foods like pureed tuna and tofu even though he said I could have them.

You guys are so LUCKY!!! I would die for pudding or cream Soups. I feel like my surgeon (who does not have an ounce of fat on him) must want to punish us for being fat. I think he's so stict because he primarily does gastic sleeve and RNY proceedures. He treats everyone the same. So his lapband people have no food because his sleeve patients have no food. :) I can't wait for something like yogurt or applesauce, or creamy Soup anything that is not a Liquid Protein yucky drink. Have a nice Sunday. Diane

I am not counting right now. I am struggling just to get a glass of juice finished. I am just not hungry. I am only 3 days post-op though.

Thanks guys. Sounds like I am not the only one survivng on very few calories. I did add some Cream of Rice yesterday and that seemed to really stick with me a little longer. Strange thing is that after abot 3/4 cup of that I was less uncomfortable than I am from just plain liquid. Such a learning curve !!

Hi all,

I was banded January 9, 2008 and have officially finished my 2 weeks as I type...YAY! It is so good to be able to talk with those experiencing the same issues. I average about 500 calories a day but that's because my Protein shake is 400 calories and it has definitely saved me from being lightheaded. My doctor started me on clear and full liquids on day one. Also, he does not believe in the puree stage and goes directly to the soft food stage.

I am also struggling to get in enough calories each day. I was banded on the 17th, so I'm 6 days post-op today. Here is what my daily menu looks like......

breakfast~ sip on crystal light (@ 24 ozs) 7am-10am

lunch~ Optifast shake

mid afternoon~ (@ 3pm) more sipping on crystal light

dinner~ creamy Tomato Soup (@ 6pm)....one of those hand held sip cups

I can only tolerate about 2/3 of the container and feel FULL...gross full, actually.

I need to get more energy somehow. Not sure what size my band is....I never asked. I do feel restriction and have to stop or risk feeling SICK. I'm extremely afraid of PB-ing.....so I really do not want to over do it. I'm on full liquids still.....for another week.

My first week I was on about 400-600 cal the second week I didn't want to go over 1000 but my doctor told me to stay at 1300. I looked it up on the internet and it said for lapband surgery to stay at 800-1300. I am not sure. I am just trying to stay under 1300. The calories add up so fast that I have been counting every one. I have seen a lot of people on here that complain that they don't loose much weight but I think the liquid and mushies can add up quick, so keep track...

I was banded on Jan 16, 2008, since about day 4, I'm been up to mushies with no problem, everything is sliding down just fine. I'm not counting calories but staying HEALTHY lowcarb because I'm Type 2 diabetic (injecting Lantus). Between the LapBand and LowCarb, I'm trying to put my diabetes in remission.

My only complaint at the moment is gas pain on the left side of the stomach but I've been passing gas at both ends. :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
