Shinyhappymommy 2 Posted January 19, 2008 I'm having surgery in a couple of weeks and I've been rereading my surgeons written materials. For the first week after surgery I'm supposed to be on Clear liquids, but he also says "You should try to purchase a Protein Drink and try to consume at least 60 grams of Protein per day." I was under the impression that Protein drinks and powders weren't considered Clear Liquids. At any rate, I'm not sure which Protein powder to buy. I live in a rural town with a Wal-mart Supercenter as my only option for a store and there are only a couple of protein supplements available here. I could wait until I go to Denver for the surgery and buy something then. I just don't want to end up with a huge container of something I don't like and have to choke down for that whole week. Also, I'm not sure about the Multivitamin supplement. I've had people who peddle Vitamins really put down any vitamins you can buy in the store as inferior and ineffective. So I'm left confused. My surgeons guidelines on the Vitamin supplement are: "a multivitamin and mineral at 100% the RDA or higher and 200% of the RDA or higher for major B complex vitamins, particularly for thiamin." What have you guys found effective. I would rather not have to special order vitamins and be able to work with what I can get at Wal-mart, but are these going to be effective? MamaJava 1 Posted January 19, 2008 I was immediately placed on full liquids the first day post-op and so getting in my Protein has been no problem since I just drink a shake made w/ Protein Powder 2 times a day. If you are on clears only, then I'm not sure that you need to worry about it until you are on your full liquids or puree stage. As far as the Vitamins go, I simply chew one children's Target brand Vitamin (just like Flintstones) in the morning, and then one more at night with dinner. Most bandsters I know just chew a children's complete multivitamin like me. I think it's easiest, and that was preferred & recommended by my nutritionist. stumpy36 0 Posted January 19, 2008 You can go to unjury.com and order protien powder as well as broth. I had samples sent to me in the chocolate and vanilla as well as the chicken broth and it taste really good. It has 20 grams of protien per serving and none of the high carbs. nip50 2 Posted January 19, 2008 For my first week I was also just on clear liquids and didn't have any of the Protein drinks. Many of us just suffered thru it. I probably started the Protein Drinks around day 5. I also live in a small community so didn't have as many choices. Anyway I did use the Protein powders that I found at wal-mart and also the low-carb slim fast. I probably preferred the low-carb slim fast. When you're buying at wal-mart be sure and pick the one that is lowest in carbs and calories per serving. Good luck with your journey.
GR8 1 Posted January 19, 2008 This is what I used and felt wondreful! whey 42 liquid Protein fruit Punch by IDS Sports - VitaminShoppe.com I mixed mine in Water - 1part IDS; 2 part Water -- Fruit punch is my favorite.
pammycakes 1 Posted January 20, 2008 I like the Viactive multi Vitamin. It is a chewable and is like a little chocolate chew. Not only are you getting your Vitamins but its like a treat in itself. Viactive also makes a chewable Calcium supplement which comes in a carmel flavor. Very delishious.
Jazzywoman 0 Posted January 20, 2008 Any whey Protein powder has no taste and just a slight vanilla smell. I put it in my coffee (which according to my dr. is a clear liquid). I gagged any time I tried to use anything else. Try Bariatric Advantage Vitamins. I buy lots of things online, just make sure that the products are intended for adult use, and bariatric patients. You probably won't be taking Vitamins for a while after surgery, so you can do some research before you actually have to purchase any. I'm also 3 weeks out of surgery, and just started taking vitamins.

My Dr and nutritionist sugested Flintstones Cheweables and said they are perfect Vitamin take two one in the am and one if the evening. I use the Flintstones Compelete and I get them at Walmart. He said they are a perfect vitamin and there is no need for anything else. I also take a Calcium supplement I found calcium chews that are cramel flavored at WalMart and I use them. I also take Biotin that I get at Walmart and it is for hair, skin and nails. I started the Biotin 1 week after surgery. The quicker the better is what my Dr. said. This helps with Hair loss. My nails are awesome. I always wore artrificial nails. I had them removed one month prior to my surgery. My natural nails are longer than the artificial nails ever where. So I think the supplement is helping. I use unjury protein and it is the best out there in my opinion. I tried Pofect and hated it. I got the chicken Soup for my clear liquid phase because I had clear liquids for three days post op and 7 days pre op. I hope this helps some!
aprilbene 0 Posted January 20, 2008 Online is the best way I've found for getting Protein drinks. I have a young son so shopping doesn't always go the way I want it to. I get the Optifast ready-made protein drinks. They have 14 grams of protein for every 8 oz. You'll only be able to have half at a time, but they're pretty good. I buy them from Northstarweightloss.com. email them for the passwords. They come right to your front door.
JosieK 120 Posted January 20, 2008 hi shiny i use Centrum chewables. they have the proper amount of Vitamins for adults. when i was operated on, i didnt know about these and used the flintstones. but they are for children, i needed to take more then 1 a day. i've had to use Protein shakes and Protein whey bullets for a large part of my journey. i've had issues eating from time to time. i tried many of them and found: 1.isopure whey protein powder shakes. they come in pouches in various flavors. i like chocolate and vanilla. i mix banana or other fruits in the vanilla....yum. it has 50 gms of protein in it and since i only used ice Water (Instead of milk) it is 300 calories. and i stay full for hours. 2. whey protein bullets. they come in 25 gms and 42 gms sizes and are only 75-100 cals. i use these if i find i'm getting in enough calories for the day but not enough protein. i havent had problems losing my hair and i must say it's because i have been religious about getting my protein and Vitamins in. i get both of these online at: A1Supplements.com - Wholesale supplements to Build Muscle, Lose Fat with EAS, MuscleTech, BSN and more! good luck
mgordon1 0 Posted January 20, 2008 I am also pre-op and I was trying different chewable vitamins(flintstones etc) and I did not like the chalkey after taste. I ordered one bottle of optisource Chewable Vitamin and Minteral Supplement from Walgreens.com - Online pharmacy & drugstore, prescriptions, health information, photo center and they taste very good, no after taste at all. I had my pre-op appointment with the hospital and doctor and they both agreed that is all the supplement that I needed. I have to take these Vitamins 3x daily. NukeChik 1 Posted January 20, 2008 My doctor has me on Flinstones. I take 2 a day. I ordered the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein. For my first week I was not allowed Protein mixes. I could have the Isopure clear drinks and also Special K Protein Water. I drank a lot of the Special K, I expecially like the Tropical and the Lemon Twist. I would not recommend the Isopure, or Isopuke as many call them. I bought 4 of them at GNC, they were almost 5 bucks a bottle and I couldn't stomach them. I know you can get the Special K and Flinstones at Wally World. I would look into the Unjury Protein powder. The shipping is cheap, the most you ever pay is 6 bucks. I bought the vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and unflavored. I had the vanilla this morning for Breakfast, very good. I would not recommend mixing them with Water though, I can't stomach that. The powder is 100 calories a scoop and then 8 ounces of milk so that makes Breakfast about 200 calories.
pgirl0408 0 Posted January 20, 2008 I went to Walgreens and got some Beneprotein powder. It doesn't have any flavor so you can add it to just whatever and that food doesn't lose its taste. If they don't have it there, you can order it on their website or have their pharmacy order it for you. I love it...
sstimpy 0 Posted January 21, 2008 For the Protien shakes I went to a GNC store and got a clear liquid shake and you can sample before you purchase it because they have small single cans that you can try:tongue: and for the vitimans my Dr. said to take two Flinstones I thought that they were for kids but I guess not:cool2:
