I have to ask about Cancun...

Recommended Posts

I've never even thought about Mexico - because I"m quite hopeful that I will be able to get my band approved through insurance.

However, I was searching around Dr. Ortiz's site and was thinking that a quick vacation to Cancun coupled with surgery would be quite nice LOL.

Of course there is all that dealing with fills and local post op care - but I had to ask - has anyone done the Cancun thing?

Just curious.

Sharon

Well, I went to Cancun for a vacation once, does that count? DH asked me to marry him there. I have very fond memories of the place. :D

LOL Alex, me too. Not the engagement part, just the vacation. I went one during spring break in college, and once with my family (pre marriage). Beautiful place, that's what got me thinking....combo band and vaca....not a bad deal!

Hey, if I was going to Mex. for the surgery Cancun would be my first choice! :) AND I would make a point of going back for ALL my fills, LOL!

When I was in Tj at Dr. Orti'z officefor a visit, he told me he was opening centers all across the U.S for fills. Using doctors who are American who he has personally proctored. There was going to be one on the east coast in NY and one in Florida and I my memory is correct I think he said Texas...These are for his patients who have travled across the US to either Mexico or Cancun for surgery ..I'm sure if you call his office they will tell you for sure. Also there are a few women on his board www.lapbandforum.com that have gone to Cancun for their surgeries, maybe they can help answer your questions.

I used Dr. Ortiz (but in TJ cause I didn't have the time to go to Cancun) and I absolutely love him & Dr. Martinez. I heard it is a little nicer in Cancun, but TJ was perfectly fine. My daughter (17yrs old, 209 lbs.) is seriously asking for the band, & I wouldn't hesitate to take her to Dr. Ortiz. If we have time, we'd go to Cancun & make it a vacation, but it looks like it will be TJ again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
