How Many Last Meals ... ?

Recommended Posts

I'm set for surgery 1/29 ... and for the most part I have been good with preparing myself for the surgery and life after.

But I do seem to be eating many 'last meals'; overindulging with burgers, chocolates and carbs.

Anyone else go thru the same pre-opt craziness?

I definitely had a few binges before my surgery. I got banded on Jan. 4th so my last couple weeks were straight through the holidays. My doc did not require any sort of pre-op diet and since it was the holidays, I gotta say I did overindulge and I ate myself to glory. I enjoyed every last minute of it, too.

I SO went through my "Last" Supper stage! I ended up gaining 8lbs. However did quickly lose them on my 2 week pre-op liquids. Was it worth it? At that time I thought so though, but not in the long run. :)

GOOD LUCK with your journey!

You are normal - I gained 5 lbs from my last meal mentality

Everyone keeps asking if I'm going to go all out before the surgery...haven't had the desire to yet but I did go to Zaxby's today for lunch because I knew it would be off limits very soon.

I have to say, I didn't feel the urge. I did take notice of the things I was eating and that I wouldn't be able to eat them anymore, but they were everyday things - like a toasted sandwich, for example.

I made my husband a cheesecake, but just didn't feel like bingeing like I usually would.

Once I lost my 10 percent and had the surgery scheduled I spent the last four nights before surgery having four "last suppers." I gained back 5 pounds but it was totally worth it!!! I'll never eat like that again...thank God.

i did that before my pre-op liquid diet. it was helpful...everything i thought i couldnt live without was really kinda disappointing!

i think it's normal to want to do that.

I am doing good during the day but dinnertimes have been Joto's Japanese Restaurant (they cook at the table its really neat & awesome food) and Sonny's BBQ (totally terrible food and service, waste of time & money) and my last will be a fancy gourmet place (comparable to a Chef Gordon Ramsey's place) tomorrow which is also a 1st date w/ a new guy so wish me well!! I'm so nervous!!

I did too! If the meal was high in fat (most were) I took an Alli pill with it. I only gained 3 pounds in a month doing that! I took the 3 pounds off before surgery.

I had so many last meals. My husband and I went to all of my fav places- Melting Pot, Olive Garden, Mc Ds, etc etc. I knew I would never enjoy them again like that.

Do I wish i had used that time to lose some wieght- probably.

Do I regret it- not really.

Most certainly. I had my pre-op on Oct 18th and set the date for Nov 15th. I went WILD eating all kinds of things I'd like to stay away from, now. I can't say I don't indulge now and then being post-op, but I still haven't wanted anything to do with those dang Twinkies (amongst other things).

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
