Gum After Eating

Recommended Posts

I get banded in 7 days and I have been trying to get a handle on the no drinking with meals. This seams to be the hardest part for me!

My question is...can I chew gum after meals (to get the taste of the food out of my mouth) instead of drinking somehting??

My doc said gum is OK but should I chew is right after a meal or wait a few???

My pre-op is a modified Atkins with 60-100 grams Protein and 30 grams carbs so I get to chew for 7 more days!!:tt1:

Thanks in advance for any advice y'all can give!!!

Just returned from Pre-op classes (6 Hours) They said absolutely no gum because if you accidently swallowed it could get stuck in band area and have to have band loosed and /or have gum scoped out at hospital. They had just had a patient who had it happen and warned us not to do the gum.

You shouldn't have any problem with chewing gum at all. I chew gum all the time now especially since I quit smoking a year ago. But, why would you want to get the flavor of food out of your mouth?

I chew gum almost every day and have never had a problem. Some Dr's say not to because of the risk of swallowing it, others say that if you swallow it it will either slide thru or you will PB it up. Either way, I don't think I've ever 'accidentally' swallowed a piece so I have no fear of getting a piece stuck.

For the Water issue....it is one of the most difficult things to change for sure (at least it was for me) but it's a habit as much as anything so you'll get used to it pretty quickly.

Good luck,

Patricia

I always chew gum...I don't think that I have swallowed a piece since I was a kid. I do chew right after a meal as well. Ask your doc, but you should be fine!

I was told no gum..

But here's an interesting thread of someone who currently has had gum stuck for a while now..

http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f9/crud-i-swallowed-piece-gum-48277/

I have to agree to look at the above site. This is a person who is newly banded and is having problems because of the gum that was accidently swallowed. You might want to think about it before chewing

I chew gum all the time, no problems. My doc's office just said not to swallow it. I also use mints sometimes. It helps. Chewing right after a meal isn't a problem and might help you feel full, if you don't already.

I do chew gum on ocassion. However, I don't chew it after meals anymore since right after eating I'm full and then to swallow too much saliva causes me to slime.

Us breathmints instead of gum if you don't want to risk swallowing the gum and getting it stuck.

I'm not a big gum chewer but now that I probably shouldn't have it, I want it. Such is life.

I don't know about the gum but at my pre-op visit on the 14th and they said that I could sip with my meals. If you gulp then there will be problems but if you take tinny sips with your meal then it is okay. I was so happy because I knew that this was going to be the hardest part of the band for me.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
