Anyone turned down due to fen/phen use?

Recommended Posts

My consult is in 2 days and they ask about fen/phen in BIG BOLD TYPE which scares me a little. I got checked out way back when and had no probs but I know some docs/insurance cos are stricter than others. <sigh> Wish me luck?

Pondimin was pulled about 15 years ago...

Don't even mention it! They will soon be removing anything related OFF any print material, I'm sure of it.

I was on Merridia in the late 1990's. Never had any problems medically and I was THE best loser in my local study group.

I was aksed but had no problems-with phen-fen and my lap band dr-I think it is something they want to be aware of in the pre-testing stage.

I was on REDUX and have to get tested for the rest of my life for the mitrial (spelling) valve heart murmur. My PCP put me on it and it was in my history of weight loss attempts that my PCP submitted to get me to the lap band.

If you've been checked out already, I wouldn't mention it. It really causes the red flag to go up and they add more tests (costly, if you are self-pay).

I was on this stuff in the late 1990s, around 1997 or so. I was tested several times but have had no problems sine that time.

I also was on Phen fen, and I clearly stated that when I filled out my evaluation forms. I've had no problem, and it didnt delay or deter my surgery at all. Good luck!

Both my wife and I used fen/phen and reported that to the doctor and had no problem being banded.

Besides if you are being covered by the same insurance they would already have a record of it.

Fen Phen use may cause heart problems for some. Instead of problems during surgery, it is better to find out about any problem before surgery. Answer the question honestly, at worst, an additional test or two will be required. Do you have insurance which covers the procedure and pre-op testing?

Yes. I use the Veterans Hospital since I am a Vet. I also have a from of Medicaid but do not use it. I like to be on equal footing at the Dr. and with Medicaid Dr.'s tend to look at you different, like you are a charity case for them, at the VA we are all the same, no insurance is better then the next person's. So far I have had pretty good luck. Been using them for about 3 years now. Just wondering if they will cover any of the P.S. for post op?

If you were on it, I'd tell them. It is surely in some medical record somewhere that a screener will look at. I'd be honest. I was on phen-fen and it was not even an issue. I remember my surgeon just asking if I had any problems and I said, "No. It was a sad day when they took it off the market because I LOVED IT!" He just laughed and went on with the exam. I don't think in any way it will cause a problem for you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
