Suggestions for Getting Liquids in when restricted

Recommended Posts

Hi All, I am almost 2 weeks into my fourth fill and am pretty restricted. On one hand I am thrilled that my appetite is virtually gone (except head hunger) and that I can be full on such a small amount of food (like one drumstick) BUT I am having a really hard time getting in liquids - not because they don't go down but because I can't gulp and I need to take small sips all the time. I am finding that it is nearly impossible to get in at least 8 ozs a day. Does anyone have a magic trick to help me out? Alternatively, does someone have a really scary story about the harm I am doing to my body to motivate me to get my act together in this area? :welldoneclap:

Well, if you get too dehydrated you band gets tighter. At least mine does. If you get too tight you won't be able to eat anything and may not even be able to get liquids of any kind down. Even saliva. Then you will need to go to the hospital and get put on IV fluids to re-hydrate and then you will probably need an unfill to help your body re-nourish it's self. Then you will have to start the whole process of getting re-filled, and believe me if you have a fill level that works, you can almost garuntee that it won't work the same, even if it is the same cc that was taken out. Seems like no two identical cc volumes are the same. Why, I don't know. Is that scary enough?

are you sure your not too tight ? If the liquids are not comfortable for you you may be too tight and need to get a slight unfill ?

What mbanja said is true. Which is why you need to make sure your not too tight !

I don't know - I could be too tight. I am giving it one more week to loosen up. I usually start loosening up about 2 weeks out. Trying to stick to easy things until it gets better.

Try warm liquid. Warm will open the band. Try warm herbal tea, warm Water, etc.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
