burning in throat...help!

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I had my second fill on Thursday (under Fluero) and I felt fine all Thursday (forgot to take meds) on Fluids...Yesterday was food and I did fine. Right before bed I took my meds (Toporol, baby asprin, follate and colace) and ate a spoonful of Peanut Butter (had pb down...but that looked gross!!! ;) )...and drank a diet snapple. Not the healthiest snack, but hey...I need to go food shopping.

Last night I woke up with a burnign in my throat...and I awoke and felt normal...I ate 1/4 cup of egg beaters and 1/2 piece of lean Breakfast sausage...got stuck..slimed and now have that awful burning again.

I'm over it already... :frown: Not very patient...huh?

So my questions... do you think it was the medications? I have to take the toporol at night, but I suppose I could do the others in the morning... was it the peanut butter and then the subsequent pbing this morning???

I'm annoyed by things like this and will need to figure it out.

I do not feel like I am too tight as I was perfectly able to eat yesterday... (eggs and sausage...fine..., chicken for lunch...fine....tuna for dinner...stuck..but after a fair amount...and I was with a friend chatting it up and not paying attention....popcorn as snack...fine...)

Anyone want to help me???

Thanks!

Rain

Rain-

It is my experience that drinking a lot of anything before bed is asking for trouble. I would avoid doing this. Also Taking meds you can take in the morning would be smart. I find the later I eat the more likely there is to be trouble. I do not currently have band related reflux but suffered for many years before banding. Good luck take care of yourself!

I get band reflux (not acid) if I eat or drink too close to bed. I have to let the food and liquid empty from the stoma before lying down. Also, if I take any kind of NSAID (alleive is the worst) I get burning in my esophogus. I only take nsaids when pain is WAY too bad for tylenol to touch, which is rare for me. Anyway...that's my experience ;)

This may be stating the obvious but, is it hearturn?

I used to get that all the time and it starts at just below my collar bone and burns all the wya up my throat, the only thing that stopped it is gaviscon.

Hope that it doesnt happen again!

That is a sign that there is too much restriction. I know I have too much restriction because I occasionally get reflux at night (wake up with a burning throat) and coughing. I have to be extremely creful not to eat anything within 2 hours prior to bedtime. Also never eat or drink anything while laying in a prone position. Antacids should work for this, or I have even heard of someone taking a tablespoon of vinegar (the esophagus reacts to the acid and shuts, preventing further backup).

It's not a good idea to eat, drink, or take meds within about three hours of bedtime if you can avoid it. Sometimes you can't such as a sleeping pill, etc. But if you can always avoid anything by mouth three hours before bedtime. Many believe they have reflux and in reality, they are PBing.

BTW, are you taking enteric coated aspirin? It's about the same size as the chewable and IF it passes through your stoma sometimes it's a better bet. If aspirin stays in your pouch (such as if you take meds at bedtime ;) ) it's really not good, it's an NSAID and that's exactly what none of want to do, leave an NSAID in our pouch for the evening.

Toporal... Isn't that a little bigger than an aspirin? A full strength aspirin? Do you think it was too big to pass?

One thing that is really important, if you get stuck and PB, finish out the day with liquids. With a fill you likely already have swelling, it's already a bit irritated. PBing makes it worse and turns into a cycle that can be hard to break. Swelling, PBing, more swelling, more PBing.

Are you taking Toporal XL or regular release? If it is the XL you won't want to break it into tiny pieces but if it is not the XL you *might* be able to break it into smaller pieces so it will pass quickly before bedtime.

Hi Wassa...thank you so much!!! I'll answer your questions (and ask more) under each of your paragraphs...!!!

----Ok this is ridiculous...but if nothing comes up, are you still pbing?? I just slime..I've never actually had anything go back into my mouth (or toilet)...

-------It is enteric coated...and I try to swallow at least 8 ounces of Water with it...

Toporal... Isn't that a little bigger than an aspirin? A full strength aspirin? Do you think it was too big to pass?

---I'm actually taking a generic (metoprolol) and it is VERY tiny...smaller almost than the baby asprin...I think it is xl...dr. mentioned eventually cutting it in half, so perhaps I'll call and see what he thinks on Monday..

One thing that is really important, if you get stuck and PB, finish out the day with liquids. With a fill you likely already have swelling, it's already a bit irritated. PBing makes it worse and turns into a cycle that can be hard to break. Swelling, PBing, more swelling, more PBing.

---I haven't do this because I don't think I am pbing...just getting stuck and waiting it out until it goes down...

I appreciate your answers...It's just annoying...especially since I've had that burning feeling all day today...Liquids for dinner for sure!!!

Thanks!

No, it's not really a PB but it is something that is causing swelling. When something is stuck in your stoma it causes your body to produce extra thick saliva so it will lube everything in hopes it will slide down through your stoma. Even if you don't produce anything (barf, PB, whatever you want to call it) you are still irritating your stoma and causing swelling. If it is stuck, it is an irritant.

BTW, are you taking enteric coated aspirin? It's about the same size as the chewable and IF it passes through your stoma sometimes it's a better bet. Good, if it is enteric coated it really shouldn't dissolve until it is beyond your pouch and big stomach. You are taking the best type of aspirin for most banded folks.

Toporal... Isn't that a little bigger than an aspirin? A full strength aspirin? Do you think it was too big to pass?

Amazingly, many docs are not aware of which tablets can be crushed or broken. A pharmacist really is the expert on the actual tablet itself. They know about the drug and action, but which tablets can be crushed... they don't always know. Most times you don't want to crush anything that ends in XL, ER, or LA after the drug name. I am trying to remember which company makes generic metoprolol and I can't think off the top of my head any that make a long acting version but don't bank on that! I'm going by memory here. Usually the little itty bitty tiny tablets are low mg generic Metoprolol. Not LA, XR, or ER. The extended release are usually a little bigger.

That's one of those issues that comes with experience. If I get stuck for more than a minute or so, I get swelling. Even if it passes I can still tell there is swelling, I feel it in my throat. It's hard to describe, it's one of those things that I never felt before banding so I can't describe it.

If you get really stuck, it won't pass in a couple of minutes, just be really super careful the rest of the day. PBing is worse because that is kinda sorta like a little mini slip each time you PB. It forces the lower stomach through the band if even just a little.

I appreciate your answers...It's just annoying...especially since I've had that burning feeling all day today...Liquids for dinner for sure!!!

Good idea! :frown:

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
