Recommended Posts

Hang in there! My BMI was just under 64 when I started. Now I"m down almost 100 lb, but want to lose about another 75. Slow but steady progress is okay! You can do it! Healthy choices, Portion Control, exercise. Stick with it!

Thank you so much for your kind words. Wow you are doing great! Good luck to you, Dot:thumbup:

Thank you very much... still difficult to accept compliments.

Even though I did it for health, I am continuing for health, I am starting to think that... gracefully accepting positive comments (about weight seem foreign) feels healthy too.

Hi all, I get banded in 12 days. I can't wait! It's going to be such a worthwhile journey for me.

On Sunday I start my liquid pre op diet. Not looking forward to it, but hell it's just 10 days out of my life:) I'll survive.

Currently my BMI is 52. I'm hoping to get it to a 'normal range.

Happy 2009 everyone!

I'm trying to get over that too! People who didn't know I had surgery are starting to notice! Sad! It only took 100lb weight loss before it was noticeable! BUT when someone tells me I am looking good, I have a hard time accepting it!

You are an incredible inspiration to me! You lost 200lbs!! I am so excited to be where you are! My BMI was 63 when I started, it's now 46. I have a long way to go, but I am going to make it! My BF says, "Slow and steady wins the race!" I know it's not a race, but I think it's a sweet thought that those of us that keep with the journey will get to our goal!

You will!!! Congrats on your upcoming Banding! For me, it was a new birth! I celebrated it like my birthday! My first Bandiversary is coming up in 27days! It's a wonderful journey, a struggle and a time to learn so many things about ourselves! Happy 2009 to you too!

Thanks! When I got home from the hospital from getting my band, my daughter had Happy Birthday Balloons all over the house, my friends sent me birthday cards and a Birthday Cup for my liquids. It was all so sweet! I've lost 129lbs in 11 months.

That's so sweet of them! I hope my family and friends do something like that. I think it's good to consider it a 'rebirth'.

You've lost 129 lbs? That's such an inspiration! I hope to lose that also, well ideally I'd like to lose 140lbs.

Kudos to you!!!

Change the phrase "I HOPE" to "I WILL"!

You CAN do it!

My starting BMI was almost 64.

It just takes determination, making the right food choices and exercise.

Hi daqui26,

The band is a WONDERFUL tool! I was nervous too, but try not to be everything will be fine. I LOVE my band! The weight comes off faster in the begining and then levels off to maybe a pound a week, at least for me. I can pretty much eat anything IF I cut it up tiny and eat SLOWLY. The best is you will only want a tiny bit and you're full! My BMI was 66 I am only 5'2". My Dr would not touch me until I got my BMI below 60 so I went on a liquid diet for 3 months. This has been a great journey for me so far, I can't wait to get under 200 pounds! The best part is I KNOW I will an so will you!

Good luck on your surgery and keep in touch!

Hi Maziemommy aka Kimberly,

WOW 200 pounds in a year and a half! WTG! I am down 139 I was banded Nov.07. Do you exercise? I must admit I don't. I know it's bad and I need to. I am really going to try and be better about it. How hard was it to get to yout goal? I hardly lose a pound a week BUT I will take it as long as it is down! I am going for a fill Jan 14th, I have not had one since June. I know that will help too. What do you eat on an average day?

Thanks!

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
