How long were you off from work?

Recommended Posts

I'm scheduled for surgery on the 30th of Jan. How long were you off from work? I've read on this site some have gone back to work in a week. Is that average?

it depends on what kind of job you have if you have a light job like a desk job you can go back to work between 1 -2 weeks unlike me who has a heavy lifting and strenuois job i was given off six weeks.

I have read were several people went back within a week. I have a desk job, had surgery on Thursday and went back to work Monday.

Each person is different. As you surgeon what he thinks.

Jeez ... my surgery date is set for a Tuesday .. I plan on being back at my desk the following Monday ...

I hope I make it.

But I guess it really does depend on the type of work you do.

I was off for 10 days, but only because I had already put in vacation time for Christmas and my surgery was the 18th. I would have went back much sooner if it didn't fall into place the way it did.

My dr told me I had NO restrictions as far as lifting and exercising from day 1, I was suprised to hear him say that, but I was glad too! I could have gone back to work on day 3 if I had to and I work a very physical job.

I had surgery on Friday 1/4/08 and told my boss I was going to try to be back on Monday since I have a friend who is close to my age and size. We have the same doctor, same hospital, she went back the following Monday and I missed an entire week!

I was so dissappointed, but you just have to follow your body. Tell your boss you need at least a week and just go back sooner if you feel up to it and you have that flexibility.

I was banded on 12/21 and am off for 5 weeks. I also had a hernia repair when they did the banding do this may make a difference. I lifted my school bag last week and was in pain for 2 days so the doc said not to go back until 1/28. I know this is longer that most people but I'm thankful for the time - I'm reading as much as I can get my hands on about life after banding and processing/putting in place the lifestyle changes that I need to make this successful.

Hey Jodie,

I am planning on doing the same thing (surgery Thursday-back to work Monday).

What was it like for you going back so soon? I am worried about it, but I do not have much choice as I don't want to be off a week without pay. I don't have much time off right now (used a lot during the holidays) and I don't want to wait a few months to build up time, so I'm hoping I'll be alright going back so soon. :welldoneclap:

I thought I would be able to go back to work tomorrow (Monday) after having surgery on Friday, but I can tell that I'm just not ready for it. I'm still in a lot of pain, and even though I have a desk job, I don't need to be sitting down all day, I need to be up walking around. I plan on calling in the morning and returning on Tuesday.

My surgery is scheduled for thursday 01-17 and I plan on being back at work the following monday. I have a desk job and actually live on the farm where I work so I'm sure if I need to go lay down for a bit it will be fine. At least I'm hoping I feel up to it. My dr. seems to think I should be fine to do this, although I am really seeing alot of ppl who took more time.

I had surgery on Friday, back to work on Tuesday, but I could have gone back on Monday. I just never felt bad.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
