Did anyone have pain 3 days post Op?

Recommended Posts

I have been having abdominal pain three days post OP and have been told it was from the gas they push into your stomach as they operate. Did anyone have the same pain, and how long will this last?

Had pain at the level of about 5 until about 8 days after my band went in. Its substantially down now, around a 0-1, and its been 11 days.

My surgery was Monday and I am still having some significant gas pains. They come and go. Things that I have tried have helped some but this gas is persistant! Try walking lots, maybe a heating pad and get some Gas-X. Not sure if the gas is easing any because of these things or if it is just finally working it's way out. I hope you feel better soon.

I asked the nurse about Gas-X and she said it won't help because it's not the same kind of gas you get from foods in your diet. The carbon dioxide they fill your belly with just has to reabsorb into your abdomen and get expelled either from the top or bottom

I personally haven't been able to burp because every time I feel like I need to, I'm terrified of swallowing any air - you know how you kind of need to swallow a little bit before the burp comes out? It causes a pain in my mid to upper chest area. Anyone else getting this?

Yes it is very common 3 days later to have alot of pain from the surgery and its the gas they pump into you.. I have had other surgeries in the past and it was always the same.. Best thing to do is walk. Just walk alot and it shouldnt last more than a day or so.:rolleyes:

As far as the Gas-X goes, just because it is gas in your abdominal cavity is no reason not to take it. Eventually it gets absorbed into your system and then the Gas-X will take care of it. Consider it a preventative for future gas.

I cannot burp!! I woke up from surgery burping and I will burp when I drink something, but when I'm sitting around I feel like I need to burp and nothing will come????

I am one week post op and never really had pain. I was sore but not painful at all. I rested alot and did pretty much nothing but walk. I took crushed chewable Gas X did it help, I don't know. I passed alot of gas I know that much. I expected the worse from surgery but got the best and I am wimp. In my case it really wasn't bad. First couple of hours it hurt then just sore. If you buy the liquid Tylonol don't take it out of the box. I did. Never used it so now I have a big container of it.

I went back to work today too. I was a little tired and my back got sore from sitting at my desk. Life with the band...so far priceless..even with self pay.

Days 2 and 3 were the worst for me. I started feeling a little better at day 4, and much better at day 5.

I was just banded Tues Jan. 8th and the gas pains are bothering me also. Today they have eased compared to last night. I wanted to burp so badly. My dr called and I told him about the gas, he said to just walk, walk, walk, gas x might help but it just has to work it's way out. I tried the gas x, I think it is working, but I am also walking and doing light housework to try and get that mess to MOVE! My port area is sore and I ate half of 1 scrambled egg this morning and I was full. My doc already put 2cc's in. I didn't want to overdo it. When I breath I can feel the soreness in my esophogus. Other than that I feel ok.

Heavens YES! Gas pains is probably the single worst side effect post-surgery. I rebounded like an athelete from the "surgical" part of it...incisions, etc. were NO problem. Had BAD pains in my left shoulder, up my left side of neck, under left shoulderblade. Had it for about two weeks. Take Gas-X regularly, walk and use a heating pad.

Dear Texan:

I just wanted to share my experience with you, I was banded on 1/9/08 at 3p.m., so it has been just barely 72 hours since my surgery. I have not experienced the "Gas" pants in the shoulder, but I feel a tremendous amount of pain in my stomach. It hurts to take a breath, it hurts to walk, hurts to move - and i got the hiccups earlier today - OH MY GOD - worst pain ever. I too, am wondering when it will subside - and I will feel a little bit of comfort ;)

I'm 3 days post op and still having some gas pains - at least I think that's what it is. Pain in left shoulder blade and up the left side of my neck.

I thought walking would help, so I went outside (can you believe it?) and took the kids for a walk at the park. I had to drive a short distance to get there and had my mother-in-law with me to help get my daughter into and out of her car seat since I'm not supposed to lift her if I can help it. I'm feeling pretty good, but still, that little walk made me feel a little weird and like maybe I shouldn't push it.

My experience exactly. I had surgury on a Friday and was planning to go back to work on the following Thursday. On Saturday and Sunday I thought there was no way I was going to make it back to work on Thursday. I woke up on Monday and felt sooo much better. I wnt to se a movie and went shopping - no problem. I was back to work on Thrusday and while I had some gas pains in my shoulder/back, it was tolerable.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
