2nd fill 3 weeks ago...need advise

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone , I had my second fill 3 weeks ago, I am up to 6cc's in a 10cc band. I followed instructions as usual . this week I am still having some difficulty eating, nothing major, just some pain while I am waiting for the food to pass through the band. Is it normal for this to be still happening, most mornings I cannot eat anything, not even oatmeal. It is something I can deffinatly put up with but would rather not if I didn't have to, I guess I am wondering if it is just taking a little longer for things to settle down in there after this fill. My first fill I had 4cc's put in and after 2 weeks I could eat anything I wanted, but I do not want that either, I simply want to be able to eat the required amounts I am suppose to. Thanks everyone. P.S.I am down 48 lbs total. Surgery was Sept 21st. The 48 includes 12lbs I lost befor WLS. Sherrylynn

I'm not even at restriction yet but from all my reading on this board and others, I think you are a little tight and that's not good. Hopefully the more knowledgable will answer.

Are you experiencing any reflux at all? If you are then you might be too tight. A lot of us have trouble doing anything but drinking first thing in the morning. Also if the food is hurting going down, make sure you are chewing properly before you swallow. Sometimes after we have been able to eat more and eat faster, we forget to go back to the basics after a fill. You might be at a good restriction so try those things first and if you are doing all that and it's still uncomfortable, I'd get a very small amount out. Sometimes .25cc can make all the difference in the world. Don't go through too long with any discomfort.

Try drinking a bit of warm Water just before you Breakfast. That usually relaxes the stomach muscles. It is usually the way for most bandster. The other thing is are your bites too large and are you chewing them to "mush" before swallowing. Too large a bite and the natural swallowing takes place before he food is broken down. If you are feeling pain by all means contact the clinic and go down 1/2 cc for awhile until you get your eating down. I have been trying to retrain myself to chew properly so have kept my fill level at 5 ccs in a Midband and am not in a hurry to have it tighter. After all, I have the rest of my life, don't you.

thankyou everyone, I contacted my doctor's office today , and like I thought I'm back on fluids for a few days, for now to see what happens. I am in no hurry to have a defill.

yes Doddie i do have the rest of my life, but i feel I have wasted to much time already being overweight, I am 46 and Iwish I could have had WLS sooner. I am now down 52 lbs and I feel great. And when I lose and don't expect to it gives me even more motivation. because I had a fill just befor Xmas I managed to lose 10lbs over the holidays. Thankyou for all the advise and help, I will keep you posted, Sherrylynn

sherrylynn. Congratulations on your weight loss. I can empathize with your desire to loose the weight and am cheering you all the way. I smile when you say you are 46. You are so young and what a wonderful life you will have when you reach goal. Good work.

PS: I am 63 and not counting. Doddie

It sounds like you might be a bit tight and need a little adjustment. Talk to you clinic about it and they will advise you.

Also, I have not been able to eat oatmeal in any form since my surgery, so maybe you want to look at other breakfast options, maybe even a quality protien shake.

Is it just in the morning that you have the discomfort, or is it anytime that you eat?

Andrew

Hello Gaffer, it is not just in the mornings, it is anytime, but not all the time if that makes sense . Sometimes supper is easier and sometimes I can't eat at all. I am hoping fluids for a few days will settle this down, I'm crossing my fingers as i do not want a defill at all, but if i have to than so be it. One thing I am surprised at is the fact that food is just not enjoyable anymore. Of course I have my cravings ,especially anything sweet.

Hello again Doddie, thankyou for the good wishes, and good luck to you as well. i still have 100 lbs to lose but I feel I can finally do it now.

Sherrylynn

sherrylynn: You sound like you have the right attitude and resilience to succeed. With the band there is no doubt. I can't wait until I hear the words "I am in the oneunder club". Go Gal, Go. Doddie

It makes total sense to me. Sounds like you are pretty close to where you want to be in terms of restriction.

Remember that defills are not a defeat, and in fact they can be a good thing. If you are too tight, you may be eating too many "soft calories" as I call them. Things like carbs, mashed potatoes, ice creams etc. I know that is what I tend to resort to when I am too tight. If you are a little looser you can eat more hard protien, chicken, fish and veggies.

Even a defill of 0.1CC can make the difference between felling good all the time, and feeing good some of the time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
