The Oregon Bariatric Center at Sacred Heart Medical Center

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to say Hi Brandy.....I'm Jen and I'm in Eugene..considering a Lap Band pretty seriosly now. You and I are close in age (I'm 30, your 33) so I'm interested to get to know you a little better and some first hand info on the place in Eugene and the care they provide as well as follow up care.

I currently don't have health insurance..but might soon be getting something LIKE Oregon Health plan called LIPA because I've been out of work due to health conditions and there's no unemployment and no jobs I can work. woohoo. Either way.....insurance or not I NEED this surgery and want to start a new life. I want to be able to keep up with my beautiful three yeear old.

How long has it been since you had your surgery? Did you have any other medical problems as well? are you happy so far? has the eating been a BIG adjustment??

Sorry so many questions...I just noticed you were in my age range.

Thanks, Jen:cool2:

Hello Jen it's very nice to meet you. I have to say I love the bariatric center.. Mostly because of Bridget and Dr. Yarbrough. However, Dr. Yarbrough is leaving the practice to go to Corvallis I hear. I am unsure if he will be doing lapband or another surgery at his new center... He specializes in alot more than WLS.

I have alot to say so I will try to keep it fairly short.... As much as I loved the bariatric center if I was self pay I would of went to Coos bay to dr. Terinsigni or something like that. I think for self pay here in Eugene its around 26k when you can have it done for 10k just a few hours away. I do not say this to undermind anyones accomplishments at the center I say that to save you money. My aunt and I are both very happy with the outcome and she went to Coos bay as self pay and my insurance paid for Eugene. That's an option u might want to weigh. However, You will have to decide if you wanna drive that far for fills or if the bariatric center will do fills even if they don't perform the surgery.

I had my surgery on 4/23/08 and wouldn't trade my band for the world. I have lost 90lbs and have plateaud. I don't plan on staying at this weight forever but for now I am happy with it. I think once the summer comes and I get moving more it will work itself out.

I didn't have any health complications going itno the surgery nor did any arise from the surgery or healing... so far I have had a pretty smooth sailing with the band so I am doing well. I feel great!

This is an old thread, but I wanted to comment about my experience with this Bariatric Center. They seem to be quite knowledgeable and since they are a bariatric center of excellence they really seem to have their stuff together. Their seminar was really informative. However, as a self pay they were quite lacking in being helpful with information about finances, I think they mainly work with insured folks. That was what ultimately made me choose another doctor. This bariatric center was extremely expensive, I thought; and really difficult to talk to about finances. However, for those insured, they are probably a fantastic choice, they seem to be excellent medically.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
