Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

Recommended Posts

Good morning,

Kindda quiet here this morning, usually when I log in the morning there's a lot more posts to read. I am getting ready to go up to the gym, need to weigh in for the Biggest Loser competition. I will be down a couple pounds but am sure it's not enough for the first week of the competition as many who are just starting out will have big losses. But that's okay I've already had my big losses. I hit 61 this morning, it's definitely slowed down but still moving so that's okay. Tonight I am going to a 'bariatric exercise class' that my hospital provides. It's an hour with a personal trainer in a class type setting and he gives you homework to work on during the week, mostly with a ball and cords so I bought some new ones yesterday, can't find my old ones and the rubber is probably rotted anyway. costco had a great deal on a set with a ball and cords. Need to work on inflating that ball though.

Somebody was asking how much food we are actually supposed to eat. I was told 3 oz of food per meal but I am sure I eat more than that.

I can eat any cut up meat in a portion about the size of my palm and a few veggies.

Good luck to all the new bandsters! It so much fun to be able to shop in the regular sizes!

I had my consult last week.

I'm a bit dazed but still determined.

First snag - Found out at sign-in that my HMO had "cancelled" me.

After much frantic calls and #$%(!! - bottom line - "computer error"

As a former computer programmer - Don't BS me -

I paid the consult fee up front and after 2 hours - finally saw PA and surgeon.

Second snag -

I AM diabetic - diagnosed nearly 3 years ago - albeit without meds but HMO, endocrinologist, regular Dr and dietitian helping me keep numbers under control.

Third -

Surgeon recommends the REALIZE band.

That's OK with me - but can I still stay in this group for support and gab-fests???

Fourth -

After a gazillion diets - I can't provide documentation of Dr-supervised dieting for a period of 6 mos. or more.

fist priority BC/BS has me on their weight management program for over a year - maybe that can be submitted.

I wasn't the best patient - there was a lot of "stuff" during that period and the dieting was low priority (seriously sick daughter, 2 knee surgeries for me, broken toe, a new knee for my mom with me still on crutches - ad nauseum

So - I'm moving forward with my evaluation testing and worst case scenario - 6 month nutritionist supervised diet.

And WHY is a physical therapist required?

Anyone else have to do that?

Co-morbidity...helps stack the deck in your favor.

Third -

This site is not BRAND SPECIFIC.

All are welcome, as far as I know.

Fourth -

After a gazillion diets - I can't provide documentation of Dr-supervised dieting for a period of 6 mos. or more.

BC/BS documentation should be sufficient...

was a professional overseeing your efforts?

So - I'm moving forward with my evaluation testing and worst case scenario - 6 month nutritionist supervised diet.

And WHY is a physical therapist required?

I think you'll sail through this in less than six months.

Have no idea why they would require physical therapist eval. I think that is the first I have heard of that!! Maybe to see where you are atwith respect to exercise capability???

Well, well, well----it certainly does look like we are finally cooking with gas (excuse the expression!). We are, indeed, back in the grove!

I have also been seeing my clothes cupboard going bare and I will have to breakdown and buy something or I will be the same! I’m on ‘round 6’ on the Goodwill path. I never thought I’d feel sad to see any of my large size clothing go but there are some things that I liked. But –then when I think about it I remember those clothes looked great on a hanger and but NOT on ME! I look far better in a cheap polo shirt at my current weight. I’ll limp along with neutral basic clothing that I can mix and match until I get to goal weight.

beckn – you are doing well! I may be down 55 but I began losing that Dec 29 at 43.4 BMI during pre-op. I’m only 5 feet tall. As my BMI gets lower --- I lose more slowly. For your beginning BMI you are doing wonderful.

Denise---Oh yes!!! I get disoriented every time I go to look at clothes. I keep walking in circles and keep finding myself in the plus sizes because they look like ‘home.’ But then I keep figuring out that they are too big and I have to go look for smaller sizes again. But when I find them – it so unfamiliar to me that I seem to stray away again until I’m back in the plus sizes again. Like I say ---I better buy SOMETHING or I’ll be a bare as my closet!

Elayne--sorry to hear about all of this. I think if I had that happen --I would . . . . wellllll . . . . we won't go there. But I really am sorry. Please stick in with us. You CAN do this!

Elayne

not sure why a physical therapy appt, maybe because of knee surgery?? who know, as we have said many times before.. every DR has their own little things they want done, as well as a million and one different post op diets

I used my 12 months DR followed/recorded diet and BP.. and that worked fine for the requirement. The key is to have it supervised and documented.. they are really looking for those repeated or continued efforts at weight loss.

(hmmmm -

forum is quiet today.

I guess everyone is out exercising)

My surgeon's PA called today -

I'm scheduled for my pulmonary and PT appts.

Apparently the PT is for evaluating my "stats" for a suitable exercise program - considering my knees and other things.

Psych is scheduled and I'm working on Cardio and Gastro.

I hope I can avoid the 6-mo diet - but I'll do whatever it takes.

You're right, Elayne. It is pretty quiet today. It's good that you are getting your appointments made -- there are so many t's to cross and i's to dot. It's interesting how each surgeon has his/her own requirements. It gets pretty frustrating at times, a little disappointing when you come upon a setback, but keep pushing. I am finding I have to keep the outcome foremost in my mind and stay focused on what I want. We'll both get there!

Hi LittleBit - welcome. As you can see, I have not been banded yet. Everything is in the process, just between appointments and approvals. The only thing I am nervous about at this point is WHEN! I know that will change when I actually have a specific date approaching - right now it is way off in the distance (late October/early November). Yeah, I know - not so far off in the distance! I went to my first seminar in March, so it has been a while... This is a great place for gathering information, calming your fears, and finding support in your journey. Lots of very nice (and smart!) people.

:unsure:i'm more worried about the 2 week liqud diet than i am about the surgery. i've had to do 4 day liquid diet for another surgery and it was tough. i guess you just have to keep thinking about what you are aimming for.

Desdemona, Thanks for the response. I know that I can do a lot more to boost the weight loss. I have been easing back into some of my old eating behaviors which is quite dangerous. I am going to start journaling and going to support meetings. I went through too much to let it slip away now. It is always so scary this thing with food. I wish I could conquer the mental issues with food. You are an inspiration. Thanks, Becky

Hey Becky, Don't worry about keeping up weight loss with everyone else. Everyone looses differently. You are doing a great job. Just refocus and you will loose. We all have trouble keeping focused at times. Plus, Little Bit, I was banded on June 18th. I too was very nervous about the two week diet. I didn't think I could do that part. If you have the Protein Drinks and stay completely away from sugar, your body won't crave it and you will be completely surprised. I had Decaf coffee, Unjury Protein mix with Water in am. lunch was Isopure Protein Drink. Supper was unjury protein mix with water and I had alot of water and sugar free drinks in between. But that protein is very very important on the liquid stage.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
