I'm back and feeling like "BIG" Ms. Smarty-Pants here. :thumbup:

I googled my little ol' thyroid gland out and found this gem;

Bariatric Surgery: gastric bypass, Vitamin deficiencies, billroth

Read it if you like medical-research-tech stuff

but here are some heart-warming excerpts;

" Interestingly, there is a recently published study that implies that bariatric surgery may improve your hypothyroidism. "

"The pathophysiologic relationship between morbid obesity and thyroid hormones is not well understood. The goal of this study was to evaluate the influence of obesity and weight reduction after bariatric surgery on thyroid hormone levels. . .

"CONCLUSION: The results of our study have demonstrated a statistically significant positive association between serum TSH within the normal range and BMI. No association was found between BMI and free T(4) serum levels. The prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism in study group was 10.5%. Weight loss after bariatric surgery improved or normalized thyroid hormone levels."

:lol:

Yay Elayne! You are the woman with the information at your fingertips. I appreciate the information and I hope I can look forward to giving up a medication. That would be great.

Speaking of PB'g, I had my 3rd PB last nite and this time it was at home, thank goodness. The first 2 PB's were on chicken and this one was on baked potato. I was really hungry last nite and fixed baked fish and 1/2 a small baked potato, I had eaten all of the fish and was nibbling at the potato when it happened. I'm still not sure if I was eating too fast or if I ate too much when it happened. I wish I could learn to slow down a little more while I'm eating too, I guess I still have to get a handle on the learning curve of my band. I'm supposed to see the surgeon Monday for possible fill #4, but since I've PB'd twice in the last month I'm not sure I want another fill yet. I still have a few days to decide and I will discuss it with the doctor. I have started getting hungrier between meals so it might be time for another one, I guess I'll see when Monday comes along. I hate these PB's, you think I'd learn by now, being 4 months out, grrrr!!

Can someone tell me how much Protein I should be eating a day or give me a formula to follow?

My doctor figured it out for me. I am not sure what formula he used. It goes my your height. I am 5'2" and I only need 60 grams per day. I have problems with my liver and too much Protein is not good for the liver.

yea, pbs aren't fun. I have had very gentle ones where I just burp and something comes up. But I have had very bad ones where I am stuck and

it goes on and on a little bit at a time and the sliming went on for hours.

I haven' done that in months now though.

Good afternoon nifties!!

I finally found out on my gall bladder today and it's not sounding good. The nurse called and rattled off a bunch of stuff but the main things I remember are poor functioning and sand like stones. Dr. Snyder is willing to take it out, he banded me as well. I just wasn't sure I was ready to schedule another surgery so soon. So I am going in to see her next Wed. for a fill and to talk to Dr. Snyder about my gall bladder. She (the nurse) said i could wait a bit, but that it usually doesn't go away or get better on it's own, especially since I am losing weight. Also I could have an attack and if I got a sharp pain or felt like a wringing of a dishcloth going on inside me to page Dr. S and head to the ER. I dont' want to live life in fear of that either. So looks like surgery. I wonder if they can go in the same holes?? I'm going to look like a pin cushion.

Hi Lori,

So sorry to hear this news. It's not fun to think about going through all the surgical stuff again. You are right to be concerned about having this hanging over your head all the time - probably best to just get it done and be done with it. Let us know what you and Dr. Snyder decide. Meanwhile prayers are with you...

Girl, don't wait to have an attack. Gallbladder surgery is similar to the lap-band....maybe a little more uncomfortable, but the recovery is fast. You will do good. He probably will go in the same holes....ask him. I will be praying for you!

Hey all,

I see my surgeon next week, then do a two week pre-surgery diet. I have been working towards this since Februrary and now that I am getting closer I am a little scared. I plan to take only a week off after surgery. How long did you take off ? How will I feel a week out? It usually takes me two days just to get the medication out of my system. I have not found a Protein Powder or drink yet. Any recomendations?

Thank you for your support.

Haven't checked in for awhile but I do read the posts every day! Thanks everyone for keeping me going!

I had my gall bladder removed 20 years ago after a quick weight loss with Nutrisystem--lots of people were having that problem and I think there was a class action suit but Nutrisystem won because they said it happens with women who lose weight quickly. I had an open surgery since they weren't doing laparoscopic then for gallbladder and while they were doing it they found large tumors on my ovaries so I went back 4 weeks later for another open surgery to have a complete hysterectomy. I'll tell you this: the lap band surgery was a piece of cake after that experience! I'm sure the gall bladder surgery now is more like the lap band surgery since they are laparoscopic. You'll do great! Anything is better than those horrible attacks.

Glad to see everyone is doing so well. I have really good restriction (finally) and am starting to lose again. Woohoo! My husband will be gone for a month and I'm hoping to really do well while he is gone. I want to be in the 170's before we go on vacation August 15th. Wish me luck! It will be my fastest weight loss since the band if I'm able to do it. But I'm hoping I can do it with this restriction.

Happy July everyone! Karen

The more I read about LB - the more I'm encouraged.

And apparently the doctors and researchers are as well.

I was on u tube for more LB research and found a series of videos by a woman named "Theresa".

She is a nurse, personable, straight-forward, informational - not at all intimidating.

She was "journal" her experience from start to finish - and there were several live videos of the actual surgeries (very graphic - I didn't want to watch the entire piece - kinda like that movie they used to show in childbirth classes where the men groaned and occasionally fainted!)

She had trouble conceiving - poly-cystic - (ovarian cysts - clusters of them) - years before her LBS after fertility treatments she had twins.

Several months later with so-so weight loss -she discovered she was about 2 months pregnant -

and after an ultrasound - the doctors were amazed that there were no signs of cysts whatsoever!

Completely healthy ovaries.

She had/has a blog and apparently the pregnancy went fine and the baby was fine as well.

Here's a link for her first video;

My recovery was easy as pie. I had my surgery on a fri and went back to work on mon. I have a desk job though.

I never had any pain. I wouldn't have even known I had surgery other than seeing the little cuts on my tummy.

/hi all tonight, Carcol54 I use unjury powder for Protein and profect liquid bullets for Protein. You can find Unjury at Unjury.com and profect bullets at Bariatric Advantage.com. Hey does this pb start when you start getting fills:crying:. I havent had a fill yet but its coming soon. Right now I can eat anything and I was banded June 18th so when I start getting fills I basically need to start over eating with teeny tiny bites right?

Every fill is a new situation with a new experience and a new learning curve. Conscious eating is ever more important as you get greater restriction.

This is all "book learning" for me at the moment, but not for much longer! :-)

I am an old banster but a new poster. I am also over 50. I was banded in 04 and have lost and gained 10 lbs. I had learned to eat around the band because I pbed so much and could not get my doctor to care about my lack of loosing and food choices. He said it was all my fault why this did not work and I should have tried a different surgery. It has been 4 years for my head to get together with my body and use this band for what it was intended for. I am interested in talking with those that have had struggles but have overcome them and what worked. I have had breast cancer and overcame it so I figure I can do it with this. Any suggestions on how to get started? My restriction is very low so will be hungry. I might even have slippage but am working with it. Thanks for your help.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
