Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

Recommended Posts

Brookings is great! we used to go every summer to this little place on the beach that had a rickety ladder down to the Water. It probably isn't even there any more. I can't remember what it was called even . . .maybe the white rock motel or something. I bet it looks sooooo different there then the last time I was there. It was just a little wide spot in the road way back then. My dad had a lot of patients that would come over from Brookings. He was a dentist in Medford and my brother is an orthopedic surgeon there now.

I don't know why I am so tight this past couple of days. I tried to eat my dinner that I brought home yesterday and could only eat a couple of bites. It makes me happy to be getting full so fast, but I just don't get it. I am still hoping this is going to make the scale move this week.

I had a Protein Shake a little bit ago, cause I just didn't feel I had enough Protein in. Tonight I don't even feel like snacking, which is unusual too. I just feel full.

I have a question. I was banded on Jan 24, 2008. Is it normal for my port area to still be sore. I have some days, I really feel good. But then some days the soreness comes back.

Thanks for your input.

Good Morning....

I very happy that I happened to find this site on the web! I have been reading everything for the last two days! I have not had surgery yet. I have an appointment with the doctor on 3/5 then an all day valuation on 4/8. Surgery should be shortly after that. I really wasn't sure about the type of surgery to have but the more I have read, I think I am going with the LapBand. I'm 53 and have been over weight for 25 years! I have tried every diet known to man and nothing has worked. I have 123 pounds to loose. I am a diabetic using an insulin pump and have high blood pressure. And I'm tired of being tired all the time!:) Can any of you out there tell me how LapBand weight loss has helped you with these types of cronic illness? Secondly do you expierence any difficulty taking medications? Thanks!

Hi marymc,

welcome to the site. I wanted to respond about being tired all the time.

I was banded 12/12/07 and have lost 47 lbs.

and, I have to tell you that I have so much more energy it is incredible.

I used to nap in the afternoons and still slept at night. I never had energy to do anything extra. Now that I have virtually eliminated the sugar ( I was a junky) and increased the Protein - I actually feel like getting some things done. I really had to push myself prior to this.

Good luck

C.N.

Thanks C.N.! That is good to hear. Sugar isn't a big problem for me because I'm diabetic. I gained 85 pounds while pregnant with my sone 25 years ago and never lost an ounce after his birth! I have had a desk job for the last 35 years and my hoby is machine embroidery. So as you can see I don't get a lot of exercise! I am confidant that my high blood pressure problem will go away but I'm not sure about the diabetis because I am insulin dependant. I will say that the more posts I read, the more excited/anxious I become about having this procedure done! And I think my husband finally agrees with me. :)

There's a thread that just started by an insulin-dependent diabetic wanting to know if there were others who had the lap band and if it chenged their dependency. The notes so far say yes! One woman also quoted research about it, but of responders, 100% were saying they were able to get off their insulin.

Hey 50's people. I need a little encouragement today. I am trying to be as patient as I can but waiting has been getting to me the last couple of days. I will have to say that my entire lap band process has been a positive one. I am just finishing up my 4th month of my 6 month pre-op insurance company required supervised diet. It's gone well; I've worked hard and lost about 40lbs. But, I am getting very discouraged this past week. I am having these feelings of not trying so hard for the rest of the trip. So afraid that my ins. company will not approve me anyway. I know these are silly thoughts but just hit this spot and having a hard time pulling myself out of it.

My BMI going into this was at 40. I have some comorbilities (fatty liver, elevated blood pressure, extreme joint pain, family history, etc.). I went into this with a great attitude after researching the lap band for about 3 years. My surgeon turned all my paperwork into my company (BCBS) at the three month point. I was denied at that point based on that fact that they require a full 6 mo. I don't worry about the surgery. I don't worry about sticking to all the rules and diet after surgery....I just worry about the insurance approval. Is it because it is so close but yet so far away?

I know I just need to calm down, keep doing the same program (cuz it's worked so far), and be patient for a couple more months. I guess what I am looking for from you guys is just a little bit of encouraging pick-me-up for today. Thanks...I am just happy to have this site to come to. I have a very supportive husband but his favorite saying is "Just forget about it. Everything will be fine". Ugh!

Hi lilo

Whoooo Hoooo.....only 2 more months to go! You are on the upside of the wait now! Waiting can be very difficult when it's all consuming so you just need to find a new way to look at, while keeping an eye on what you have accomplished. Then it will be over before you know it. Dropping 40lbs in 4 months is outstanding!

Spring is fast approaching. Try working on your list of all those spring projects so that you don't dwell on the 2 months.

May be the sound of months is difficult for you...think of it in days or weeks, those are shorter!

Good Luck

Thanks for the positive words, Marymc. I will try the daily thing. I really think what is getting to me is that I live in Minnesota...cannot get out and walk, etc. I do my treadmill but just not the same. I work out of the home so that adds to my cabin fever. I have all sorts of projects lined up to keep me busy up until the time this six months is over and done with. I feel better already...thanks

Denise - Good for you that you aren't feeling like snacking - I know for me when I don't get up in the middle of the night and eat - it's a good day - those scales should be moving...

Dianne - My port site hurt the longest - you are barely 1 month out - I wouldn't be too concern - you are still healing...

Mary - Welcome to our group...

I am not diabetic - but was on 2 blood pressure meds - not just on 1 - as to how i feel - I FEEL GREAT - I FEEL 10 YRS YOUNGER - I HAVE 110% MORE ENERGY THAN 7 months ago - I use to sleep my weekends away - heck I wonder why I was carrying around 75 lbs - that's alot of weight - we don't think 75 lbs of fat weighs that much but - but it does - I love my band and I love the way I feel - I love that I have done the work that is needed to get this weight off - I eat healthy 98% of the time - I excercise 4 days a week - I am loving life...

Lilo

I didn't have to do the supervised diet - but all I can tell you is that you are doing a great job and learning new behaviors which will help you once you are banded - the band doesn't do the work - you do - our issues with food are more mental than phyiscal - you will have a lot of knowledge & tools to help you when you are banded - that will help you continue to lose.

You can do it - you have proven that so far - Ya it's hard - but as we all know life is hard and we can will this battle..

Thanks, Indiogirl. I know I can do this. I just don't know how to ask for help sometimes and that gets me in trouble. A person cannot be in this world and handle their troubles all alone. I am going to try and talk about my things a little more.

I have noticed your posts and you are so much help to people and so positive. Thanks for your encouragement.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
