Nervous About Attending Seminar

Recommended Posts

I'm nervous about attending this seminar on Saturday. I mean I was just outside on break at work thinking about this. I'm going to be going to a seminar where there is going to be bigger people there than me and I'll look skinny compared to them and they will be looking at me like why the hell are you here. lol :rolleyes Well I have a BMI of 41.6 and I'm only 5 foot 5inches. I carry my weight in my upper body, I have skinny calves and ankles and little hands and wrists. I look like I'm carrying around two tires one on top of the other and big boobies and a broad back.

So I'm just wondering if anyone has felt like this before going to a seminar..I mean I really WANT AND NEED this surgery, but I dont want to be stared at like you arent that big why the hell are you here. Do ya know what I mean? :faint:

I must tell you that my thoughts are that no one is going to be looking at you like that and if they are then they have a problem. People get the band that don't need to lose much weight at all. Some get it with a BMI of 30.

Right after my surgery I went in for a follow up and there was a man that came in the office and I felt embarrased he was so fit and looked great. Then the receptionist handed him his paper work and I realized that he had been successful with his surgery.

Hang in there you will do great and you will see people all different sizes.

I went to the seminar thinking I had a BMI of 39 (thought I was 5'2"--turns out I'm only 5'0"--BMI of 41!!). But I had no clue how many other people would be there or what they would look like (and didn't care). Like you, I was one of the smaller in the room--and there were many people in wheelchairs, with walkers, etc.

But here's the comforting thought for you--family and friends were allowed to attend the seminar, too, so there were plenty of thinner people--and you didn't know who was there looking into the surgery and who was just family and friends. Had probably 50 people in the room--

And the information you will get will fill you up with knowledge about your future life, so enjoy...! :)

I'm pretty certain no one is going to be looking at you and wondering why you're there..

Everyone is pretty much anxious to find out more information about surgery, they're not there to judge your weight and decide if you're a candidate for the surgery :)

I think most everyone will be pretty wrapped up in their own issues and the questions they have to be worried about anyone else.

I was probably the smallest one at the seminar I went to and I was like YAHOO. Not very often I get to be the skinny person!

I was one of the smallest people in my seminar too . Also probably one of the youngest. At first I thought " maybe Im not big enough for this YET " then i thought " That's dumb , Im doing this so i do not get any bigger"

But I remeber looking around thinking " maybe i would not qualify " because everyone else was bigger than me . But at the time i was 5'4 250 i carry my weight well according to everyone .

So like others said dont worry what others think, they wont be thinking about you LOL !

The other people in the seminar with you are most likely going to be so self-conscious themselves, that they won't be concerned with anything else. I don't remember anything about any of the other people in the seminar with me, only that it was standing room only, and that I cried when he explained that obesity isn't your fault, it's a DISEASE that can be treated!

You'll be fine! :)

I hadn't even thought about who might be there. I guess I am self-absorbed at this point. I am so excited about this next Saturday. My dh is going with me and I guess I just am anxious to take this step so I can get to the next one. You will be fine. Don't worry about who is there and what they are thinking. I have worried about what others have thought about the fat me long enough. I need to worry about me and what I am doing for me now, not what others think. Good luck.

I'm with most people. The other people attending the seminar are probably thinking the same way as you and worrying what you think of them. You are doing it for yourself and not anyone else, so just go and be proud that you are doing it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
