Hi everyone....I am 32 and live in Northern Ohio. I have also been overweight most of my life. I just started looking into the lap band surgery. So new to alot of this. Any good advice would be great. I want to feel good about myself and feel this is one way to do that. I have let my self esteem get so bad that I am embarrassed to even go out with friends, because I feel everyone looks at us "bigger" people as bad. Tired of that. I give everyone on here credit for the great success they have gotten from their surgeries. Keep up the good work...:D

I felt the same way. I was so ashamed to even go out in public, I avoided get-togethers with friends ... I really had let myself go. Here I am now 5+ months into this journey, and while I'm only halfway to my goal, I can tell you I feel SO MUCH better about myself and I don't hide from the world anymore. Getting banded was by far the best decision I've ever made ... Good luck to you!

Hello. I'm 34 for another week anyway. I live in southern Indiana. I'm divorced with two kids, 12 and 4. I started this journey last April. I've been approved by my insurance company and have gone through EVERYTHING needed to have the surgery. For some reason, I can't lose the 5% I need to in order to get my surgery date. I exercise...eat right (most of the time). I've been on Optifast since last Saturday hoping to speed up the weight loss; however, when weighed at the Dr.'s office on Wednesday the loss was only 2lbs. My scale that morning said a loss of 7lbs. I even weighed before I went to the Dr's office and the scales are 1.5lbs in difference (Dr's weighing more). Anyway, the whole thing has gotten me so FRUSTRATED!!! If anyone can give me any pointers, please feel free....

I am 38 and just got banded on monday. I have to tell you that I feel INCREDIBLE! I am not hungry at all ( that's a first, for me) and I feel good. I have some mild discomfort at port site which by now is totally tolerable without pain meds. Tomorrow I am going to get up, take a shower, get dressed, put my face on and face the world! I am tired of recovering at this point and feel strong enough to go back to work, although i wont go back until next tuesday, just to be safe. You will feel this good too! already I know it is the best decision for me, I questioned myself too, but I cant tell enough how great I feel. good luck to you and cant wait to be bandsters together! I am in SoCal, just minutes from Disneyland!!

Hey there...I'm 34, married for almost 10 years, two sons--ages 7 and 4. I was banded April 30, 2007 and have lost 77 pounds as of this morning. I'm kind of in a rut right now, but I'll get myself moving again. My goal is to reach a 100 pound loss by my bandiversary. Nice to meet you all and I'm looking forward to chatting with everyone.

Hello!

I'm 34, but will be 35 in a few weeks. In fact I have my surgery on the 29th, and Feb 2nd is my birthday! I'm in Carrollton, TX (Dallas suburb) and I start my two week liquid diet on Tuesday!

I hope I make it. I wonder how grumpy I'm going to be...

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
