I'm just curious...

If you've had your psych eval, what was it like? I've got mine coming up in a couple of weeks, and though I'm not worried about it (my husband thinks I should be! ), I'm really curious about it. What was it like? What kind of stuff did you discuss? My hubby and I were talking about how the appointment is three hours long, and I told him, "Wow! Three hours! That's a LOT of inkblots!" LOL

Hi Heather,

You'll see other posts here and there about this. Three hours does seem like a long time but they could be including time for the Personality Assessment survey that some therapists administer. I didn't have to take that, but I know lots of docs include this lengthy multiple-choice quiz.

Otherwise, they're just basically checking to see that you understand the consequences of being banded, and that you aren't prone to some eating disorder or other. This is a big step you're taking and it's important you're psychologically as well as physically prepared for it.

Heather,

I had my psych eval last week. I was a little nervous at the beginning too...didn't know what to expect but it was rather enlightening! First I answered a bunch of statements (written, test like) that I either choose true or false...they were things like..."I have thought of suicide" (you answer true or false)..."I take other peoples medications that are not prescribed to me"...stuff like that (there were 120 statements). That took about 30-45 minutes. Then I went in and talked to the psychologist and she asked me questions like "what brought you to the decision to have bariatric surgery","is your family supportive","do you know the risks of the surgery" , "how do you think your friends/family will react when you loose a lot of weight". She also asked about my childhood. That was about it...it was easy!!!!! THen at the end, she told me she would send my doctor a positive report! The whole thing took about 2 1/2 hours.

Good luck, I'm sure everything will go just fine!

Marsha

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
