Post-op exercise..when did you start taking different classes at the gym (or DVDs)?

Recommended Posts

Hi.. I am getting banded in 1/10. The good news is I have always been fairly active, and belong to a gym that I actually like attending. How soon after surgery were you able to start taking the different classes at the gym (or doing the DVDs at home? I know I can go walking ASAP, but I was wondering about swimming, spinning, yoga, pilates, cardio ball, etc. You know...all those fun classes that make working out in the winter more fun! Also, I have a few sessions with a personal trainer, when do you think I could start some light weight training?

Talk to your doc. Every one is different, but for me, my doc required walking after surgery, very light cardio (think elliptical/walking) after 2-3 weeks, depending on how I felt, and no strength training until after 6 weeks. I stuck to the elliptical for a while before braving my first spin class (almost 2 months). I'm sure you'll get more opinions but I would definatly check with your doc first.

hi

like JM said it is key to check with your doctor.

my doctor said it was ok to do anything except weight lift after my 1st post op appointment with him. (even abs-which i was hoping he would say to take off 2 years from doing that :whoo:)

great that you are planning ahead as exercise is key for me both physically and mentally

I've been wondering the same thing....which I plan on asking my doctor also. My band date is set for 03/11. I started back to working out at our gym, which we also love a lot. My kids (daughter-13; son-9) keep on my about going, as they love it there too! Good luck this week on your banding. How are you feeling? How's the liquid diet going? My surgeon recommends Slimfast Low Carb for before surgery & any other kind you want afterwards. What are you using? Have you tried different kinds or has your surgeon recommended one? Do you like it?

Walked right away. No weights for 6 weeks. No swimming until incisions were COMPLETELY healed.

I'm 7 weeks out and started with a trainer last week. I also started swimming last week, as one of my incisions pulled apart a couple weeks after surgery when I went Christmas shopping and lifted WAY to many gifts. My incisions also started spitting sutures, so I had to wait longer than I wanted to. I was told I can do anything I want as long as it doesn't put undue pressure on my port site. My deep Water aerobics class requires a belt, but it has to be cinched up so tight to not ride up, that it hurts my port. I hope this is temporary, as the workout is incredible!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
