I think I'm too fat for my first fill....

Recommended Posts

Even though my surgery was Nov. 9th, I still haven't had my first fill yet because I got sick (flu) and have been a slow healer. My Dr. also told me that my port was positioned very deeply.

On my last check up a month ago, my Dr. was feeling around for my port and said it would be a good idea to wait till a dropped some more weight so it was easier to find my port.

After a month, I don't think I've lost any weight. Actually, I might have gained a bit. Now I'm afraid that since my port is very deep that I won't be able to get a fill. My appt. is Monday the 7th.

Does anyone else have deep port problems? I'm actually pretty surprised I had so much abdominal fat....I'm 5'7", 211lbs and my weight is pretty evenly distributed.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I got my first fill at, I believe it was, 500-ish lbs. So if I didn't have a problem, you should be fine.

I would be suspect of the doctor. Basically he is saying to you...."Oops, apparently I put the port too deep so now I can't do anhything for you until you do it all on your own." I think I would start kicking up a big fuss, myself.

That Is Unreal....we Are All Big When We Start Getting Our First Fills. He Needs To Help You Succeed Here, Not Put You Down.....maybe Consider Getting A Second Opinion???

I Know I Would Be Pissed....

Good Luck....

The nurse said my port was deep but she got it. I had to push my rib cage up and that helped. It shouldn't be so deep they can't reach it. If it is your doc messed up.

Good luck!

That sounds pretty hokey to me....

The whole point of the band is to get fills and have restriction to help you lose weight. I had my first fill at about 280lbs with no problems whatsoever. 6 fills and 100+lbs lost and I have never had a problem with finding my port or getting fills.

I would suggest laying on your back and poking around yourself looking for your port. You should be able to feel it quite easily. Once you've found it, still flat on your back, lift your feet straight up off the floor (its like doing a mini ab crunch) When your abs tighten you should be able to feel your port pop right up !!! This brings it closer to the surface and makes it easier to access.

My clinic has us do this for every fill and every person I have ever had do a fill (4 different nurses) have all hit it first try !!!

Good luck and all the best !!!

Tell your doc to use fluoro.... He needs to use a huber needle as well... It is what is recommended by the manufacturer anyway. When you lay on your back it makes it a lot easy for the doc to locate it... He is stupid to think that you will lose weight without a fill........... Obviously he must be thin as a rail... Best wishes and consider finding a different fill doc.

Have you SEEN the needle that they use to do fills with? It's plenty long enough that he should be able to access your port. If he can't FIND it, then he needs to perform the fill under fluoro. Unless you have really good restriction, there is no reason for your doctor to not give you a fill.

Try laying on your back and then bringing your head up (as if you were going to do a sit-up). It should push your port up towards the skin and you could at least feel it. (It's the only way I can feel mine).

I was just four weeks prior to you and I've had two fills already--so get hopping, girl! :)

That's not possible. I was almost 400 pounds and my surgeon could fill me. I had inches of fat that he had to push past to find my port but he did it. He did say that it was down very deep and he struggled but didn't give up. It took 30 minutes of me bearing down, lifting my legs, holding my breath and him pushing and pushing but we made it! So, do not take that as an excuse!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
