I was told by my doctor to in now way consume Liquid Protein or shakes after I was back on regular food. I was cruising through the food section of the board and people posting what they eat daily (to give others ideas on variety) and notice that many people have Protein Shakes as a regular part of their diet.

How many people are taking in liquid Protein as part of their overall plan (after post-op diet is finished)?

I Drink one in the am because i am not a Breakfast person and I am normally tight in the am . My doc does not want us to drink our calories either.

But like i said i only drink one in the am . It holds me over until lunch .

If your doc says not to consume them I would not do it . If you find later after your fills that your very tight in the am and can not eat solids in the am I would address it then with him if you can drink one , Personally I would rather NOT have to drink one but its better than not "eating" breakfast.

I plan on using them when I need to boost calories or as a 'hold me over' snack until meal time. I look at them as a vehicle for protien and other nutrients. I also make sure they are as low calorie as possible and they are added into my tracking of daily calorie lists.

I was told to never drink calories, to eat real food and get used to chewing properly and eating slowly to start eating normally as much as possible to get the hang of it. We aren't supposed to eat Soup, either.(it isn't restricted, they just recommend not eating it often because it is basically the same as drinking while you are eating, as are Protein shakes.)

Plus, you get way less satiety (feeling satisfied and not hungry) with Protein Shakes - you feel way more satisfied for longer with chicken or cottage cheese, so why drink a Protein Shake? I'd rather eat! I don't really have any problem meeting my daily protein requirements with regular food. I just can't eat a lot of other stuff.

Just an FYI watch out with using them just to "Boost" Your calories.

That most of the time is what docs discourage. Most docs would rather you eat your Protein and calories than drink them . If you get into the habit early of drinking your calories you can fall into the habit of drinking the wrong things. I know people who drink 2 milk shakes a day to boost the calorie intake. I personally do not track calories. I did at first because I my nutrionist realized I was not eating ENOUGH . SO i tracked for a few weeks to make sure i was eating enough . But I dont do that anymore.

I find that if I eat a few more calories I have more success at losing weight. Too few calories and too many calories have a negative impact. If I am low on protien for the day or am not hungry but only ate 500 calories that day, I will have a low cal protien shake to make sure I eat enough to keep me going. It is not a habit of drinking calories, it is all a part of tracking how many calories I eat. Iwill always chose food, first, over a shake.< /p>

Right , I am the same way . I dont track Protein anymore. I just meant , i know people who drink like 4 shakes a day to get in calories. I guess I meant Dont drink more than you eat . Does that make sense ? Not that you do that ,but be careful to not get into that habit because I Think espically if you track calories it can be easy to say " oh ill just drink 2 shakes and i met my calories for the day .

hi

i am tight in the morning and cant eat till late afternoon/nighttime. so when i take a Protein shake...i have more energy and feel full most of the day

also like the other girls have said...i lose weight better when i have more calories. when i ate too few...my weight loss halted.

if i know my calories are going to be ok for a day...i still take the Protein whey bullets. they have less than 100 calories and 25-42 gms of protein.

i attribute this regimen with the fact i havent lost my hair. i have been religious about protein and Water drinking from day 1.

It is on my post-OP diet. Protein Shakes 3x a day, between meals. I am not sure I will do three a day, but I will probably continue my Isopure in the AM like I am now. It is quick, keeps me full until lunch. I am not a morning person!

It was not until my last fill that I got tight in the am and stayed that way until around noon . That's why i drink my Bolthouse in the am .

I tried the protein bullets but those too gave me a Migraine. HATE MY head sometimes LOL I was mad too because they did not taste too bad either.

I use Gladiator chocolate Protein powder from smoothie king - it is 45g of Protein and 180 calories, no fat, no carb. Mix with Water and there is no gritty taste. It is my breakfast m-f.

My dr said not to drink my calories either (I think he meant soda, starucks, etc) but I told him at my last fill and he seemed to be happy about the protein.

I was considering the Unjury Protein Powder and/or Slim Fast Lo-Carb for Breakfast (in the car) and then having a yogurt and banana for mid morning snack or something along those lines. I was actually hoping to make either the Unjury, Isopure, or Slim Fast Lo-Carb part of my daily Protein intake well after surgery. So do you think they are referring to not drinking your calories as in something with little to no nutritional value??

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
