Cheese Soup Okay?

Recommended Posts

I just started my phase II, Liquid Protein diet. I had some cheese Soup. I feel fine, but did I violate some liquid Protein laws?

It has 9 grams of protein. That's good, right?

No solid chunks of anything.

It tasted good, but at this point, anything is good. Especially better than those high-Protein drinks.

Big D, my husband was banded with me...and he's more restricted than I am. He LOVES Jasons Deli or Panera Breads' broccoli cheese Soup. He easily eats that 3/4 times a wk.....:)

I'm in Allen, Texas, just up the street from you! The goal is to hit 40-60 grams of Protein. You should still be drinking some of the Protein Shakes. I was banded 12/21. Good luck! I was on all liquids till 12/31, just now getting the mushy foods.

Protein shakes generally have better quality Protein and higher amounts of it. I found them very unpalettable in the beginning. My tips - if you're mixing them with Water, mix with milk or soy instead. Makes a huge difference. And add in flavor - a spoon of Peanut Butter, a dash of coffee flavoring, etc.

I never had a liquid protein stage so I can't share my solutions. My surgeon didn't allow Soups until the "thick liquid" stage. During liquids it was Jello, popsicles, etc.

It sounds like there is a lot of leeway with the dieting. My doc had me on phase I, the clear liquid phase for 3 days after surgery. Now I'm in phase II, which means I should be doing liquid Protein. I don't think I'm getting enough protein, but I know I'm losing weight quickly. I too have a hard time with the taste of the high Protein Drinks. Phase II will last for 5 weeks, so after the first week of February, I'll graduate to phase III which basically means I'll be back to "normal" eating except my capacity to gorge will be greatly limited. By that time, I will have had my first fill. So that's what my doctor requires.

Big-D, I think you're fine with the cheese Soup, I added shredded cheese to most of my cream Soups when I was on the full liquid stage of my post-op diet, and made sure that it was all melted before I ate it. Just make sure that you're getting in enough Protein, it helps the body heal!

Don't worry about your Protein counts right now. Very, very few people find they can actually meet their Protein requirements within the first... I'd guesstimate 2 - 3 weeks post op. I know I could barely get down a few ounces of Water, let along Water with anything in it.

I've never encounterd two surgeons who used the same post-op diet. I don't remember the specifics of mine now, but it was something like liquids for 3 or 4 days, then thick liquids which included "cream of" Soups, yogurt, etc. Then mushies, then soft solids, then as tolerated. I think all in all it was an 8 week acclimation period.

My pre-op diet was 2 or 3 days of clear, SF liquids. I never cared for Soup before I was banded, but that first taste of "cream of" soup was heavenly - to finally get something with some consistency, and non-fruit flavor. I will never forget that moment. :)

Mmmm....my first creamy Soup after surgery was total bliss! I had been on a liquid diet for 10 days pre-op and then on Clear Liquids for a week post-op, and I thought I'd died and gone to heaven at that first sip of Campbell's Velvety Potato soup at hand, with a sprinkling of shredded cheese melted in....

I agree with Wheetsin, I'll never forget that moment, either!

Oh, and I didn't mean to be pushing Protein, it's just that any extra Protein that you can manage at this time helps stabilize blood sugar, and helps the healing process. I certainly didn't mean to be a protein Nazi.

Melted cheese in my creamy Soups was probably my only source of protein at this stage of my post-op diet, because the Protein shakes gave me the trots...

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
