Oatmeal Question

Recommended Posts

Can those of you who have already been banded tolerate oatmeal? I have seen a lot of lists that include cream of wheat but nothing about oatmeal. Is it too "sticky"?

:hungry:

I never had any problems with oatmeal, and to this day I still enjoy my peaches & cream! It's very filling IMO.

Thanks for the reply. I am THRILLED! I could live on oatmeal if I had too. Do you have to thin it down or can you tolerate it at a pretty thick consistency? :bounce:

I'm at a great restriction, and sticky thick oatmeal doesn't bother me at all.

BUT.. I don't put huge spoonfulls in my mouth at once. I take small bites and I moosh it around in my mouth a bit...and chew the peach pieces.

I found sugar-free oatmeal at Walmart (their store brand) and it's very good. I can tolerate it and it fills me. You don't even have to put splenda or any sugar substitute in it. Congrats on your surgery.

I actually overcook my oatmeal, so it's very sticky. Stays with me longer, and fills me up fast that way. I do make sure that I take small bites, and mush it up in my mouth before I swallow it, and take my time.

I have a package of instant oatmeal with 20g of Protein in it every morning. Sometimes I dont remember to eat again until after 3pm. I've never had any problems with it.

Teresajo, do you add Protein to it, or does it come with that much protein in it? I'm very interested in it if it's already got that much in it, and especially if it's not sweetened. I like plain oatmeal best.

Pre-banding I hated oatmeal. Now, I have found the low sugar Quaker packets. I use 1/2 packet with 1/3 cup skim milk, and I make it a little runny. That's my breakfast every morning and I actually like it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
