Same day surgery

Recommended Posts

I keep seeing lists of things to take to the hospital for your overnight stay, but I don't think I've seen anyone say they went home the same day. My doctor does outpatient surgery. Is anyone else doing this?

I had the surgery and went home the same day. I know in my area, this is considered day surgery unless there are complications. I did fine, and would rather be home than in a hospital. The nurses checked to be sure everything was "flowing" by doing an x-ray while I swallowed a vile substance. I went home and drank some watered-down SlimFast, took my pain med, and rested well in my own recliner. :)

My doctor requires an overnight stay. I would probably prefer to do it as an outpatient, but I don't have a choice. Oh well...at least it is only a one night stay.

CityGirl, you will do just fine - I know if I had kids I would want to stay overnight. Some people who have their surgeries later in the day stay overnight, too. I bet you are getting excited and nervous!!

Gingerbug - you're home!!! So, how was it? Help me since I'm going on Friday.

How are you???

Shirley

I feel much better this time than I did with my gallbladder surgery and my tubal ligation. I am getting around and drinking lots of Water and trying to burp. Taking an antacid and gas x strips. Pretty tenderand I have to sleep sitting up a bit.

Congratulations Ginger, and to all you getting ready for surgery - WAY TO GO!

I was outpatient - my Doctor's guide was anyone under 40BMI who didn't have high risks (ie heart problems) could be done in the Surgery Center and go home. I went in at 7:30am, surgery at 9:00am, husband picked me up around Noon. It was great to be in the "nest" with all my dogs... No Dogs in Hospitals! Bummer...

My doctor told me that I can plan to stay the night but if things go smoothly with my surgery and afterward that I may end up going home that day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
