Port location problem?

Recommended Posts

I called my clinic about this and the nurse is going to get back to me after she talks to the doc, but I wanted to see if anyone else has dealt with this.

Men might want to stop reading this right now. :)

It seems that my port is right under where my wire for my bra is and it's causing quite a bit of discomfort. Stupid me never asked where the port was going to be placed and I'm concerned that perhaps, given that the surgery was done by men, they didn't take into account my being, um, well-endowed and the fact that gravity and nursing three children has not been kind to my girls. I wear only underwires, so this presents a very real problem. It mostly hurts when I'm sitting or when I bend over. It's almost like the wire digs in behind the port.

The nurse assured me I wouldn't hurt my port and said that as I lose weight, the port shifts down and to the left (it's on my left, right below my rib cage), so this will probably go away. But sometimes it really hurts!

Like I said, the nurse is going to talk to the doctor tomorrow. I go in for my first fill in two weeks and it will be done with floro, but that's a while. I can feel the port right below the wire. I have lost almost 30 lbs, so maybe some of my padding is gone, but this location will not work long term. And no, I can't switch to soft cup bras. :)

Has this happened to anyone else? Ack, help! LOL!

Are you newly banded? I guess so if you're about to have your first fill..

My doc moved my port from stomach to between my breasts, right on the bra line.

It was uncomfortable for about a month, but now (3 months later) I do not notice it.

Hopefully it will heal and won't bother you either :)

Mine is next to my belly button onthe right. I am a police officer and have to wear a utility belt. OUCH!.. my doc won't let me wear my belt for another month. So, I'm on desk duty.

Truly. If anything it will get worse. The port usually becomes more visable when you lose weight. Not sure about moving on its own.

I was told the port can be moved if necessary and that it was not complicated. I doubt the Dr. would want to do that this early into your band process.

Ask the Dr at your next visit what options are available to you down the road.

The pain won't get worse, if you're healing. The pain I had initially with the bra rubbin it was that it felt like it was burned and the scars were sensitive. That sensitivity went away and where you can physically feel the port by touching the skin, it doesn't hurt.

It really feels more like pressure is put on it and it's pushed at a funny angle. I don't mind that I can feel it through my skin, it's the discomfort that bothers me. I can see that it might get better as I lose weight, but at what point? Unfortunately, my belly is where a lot of my weight seems to have gathered, so it might take a while to get rid of it all. And since the girls aren't exactly high and perky, where my underwire hits is actually kindof low on my torso. Gah.

I'll see what the doc says. I'm sure it's not a big deal, I'd just like them to know this is an issue.

Thanks for the replies!

Ladybug,

I, too, and very well endowed, and have only been banded since 11/21... I am also experiencing this burning pain around the port area, and general pressure/pain where my bra sits (also wired).

I have not asked my Dr. yet because I just figured the stitches needed to heal a bit more.

-----------

FairyFacade,

Can I ask you why you had to have a port revision?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
