HELP! Scared of the Operation!

Recommended Posts

I am totally new to this! I have met with the surgeron and have been to the informational meeting! I have been approved by my insurance! I just have all of my pre-operational tests to do. I've been reading a lot and I'm starting to get scared! I'm hearing about sliming! No soda after the surgery for life! Can't eat bread! Can drink liquor! Can't have certain veggies! liquid diets before and after surgery! I'm just starting to question is this really for me! I guess I'm just looking for some guidance. I am going to speak to a dietian and she specializes in Lap Banding...but just scared that if I go through all of this...am I going to stick to it! I LOVE food...is the surgery worth it?? I know its about will power and if I want it bad enough...but this surgery seem pretty scary! So any advice or help anyone can give me would be great!

its understandable feeling the way you do i too felt the same way. just take one day at a time. after your surgery you will have what they call the 6 week hell diet 2 weeks liquids 2 weeks mushies and then 2 weeks soft foods and then on to regular foods. yes your right about the bread and soda . but some people can tolerate and eat the bread some cant. toast your bread if you like bread it will be better cause its not soft and doughy to where it would get stuck. as far as soda every once in awhile having a soda wont hurt but heres the catch. it has to be diet with no sugar or calories andd heres the best part after that you have to let it go flat so you dont get no carbonation cause the carbonation gives you gas and it will stretch your pouch. ill tell you what i was a mountain dew aholic!!!! but after i had the surgery and doing the liqiud phase . i dont miss it as long as i have my crystal light and Water im ok. right now im on my last week of mushies. gonna be starting soft food next. i feel great and i dont regret it one bit. i love my band ill be able to eat what i did before as well as you. but now i make healthier choices and i bake and steam everything instead of fry. but as i was saying youll be able to eat things you did before just in smaller quantities. dont worry youll do great!

Everyone is scared of the operation and the after effects - no matter how much you want the operation it is going to change your life style. but look at it this way, it will be more important to you the quality of the food than the quantity. The diet set by each Dr is different. I have not been told that I can never have diet Coke etc again. I can't have it for at least 2-3 months but after that it is depenent on whether my band will let me drink it or not.

Every person is different in what they can eat. I know some bandsters that can eat everything they used to eat - they just choose not to. I have only been banded since Dec 3 so have not had a fill yet and I am still able to eat any type of food. This may change after a fill - just have to see how it goes.

If you are having second thoughts, it is better that you do it now before it's too late - but I think that if you have come this far then you have pretty much made up your mind. Just remember that the band is not the easy way out, it's just a tool.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

As Far As Soda Goes. I Was A Soda Junkie , A Few Cases A Week , And It Was Diet. And Dont Miss It At All, Being Nervous Is Normal. It Is A Life Change Though And Not Trying To Sound Mean But You Need To Be Able To Comply, Or It Wont Work. Its Not A Cure Its A Tool. If You Are Starting To Question If Its For You Then You May Not Be Ready Yet. You Need To Be 100 % On In Order For It To Work. Good Luck Either Way!!!!!!

What exactly is "sliming". I have read about it a little on the board, but really do not know what to expect?

Basically If U Eat Too Much, Or Something Gets "stuck" You Experience Pain And Start Producing Lots Of Phlegm. Then Up Comes The Phlegm, Hence Sliming, Kinda A Crude Term For It But There Is Noother Way To Describe It Either

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
