Lap band 8 months out

Recommended Posts

Hi I had my lapband on April 2, 2007 adn have lost 72 pounds to date with 2 fills. I was really scared at first but not I am really adjusted to my lapband and have had only a few complications. I would like to know what the normal weight loss is after this time and am I on the right track? I go to the gym after being sedentary for 52 years and can't believe what I can do with the help of my trainer. I go four times a week usually and do cardio and weight training. I eat well but find that I don't like chicken too much but can tolerate beef well. Would like to meet people who are changing their lives and bodies as well. Jeri:ranger:

Hey Jeri. I am just two weeks out and wondered if you had felt any restriction before your first fill?

Hi Jeri. I'm 8 months out too. I was banded on April 30. I have lost 76 pounds so we're pretty much on the same track. I feel fantastic and have lots of energy. It sounds like you are doing great. I wish that I could say that I work out 4 times a week...that's what I'm going to be shooting for in 2008. Good luck to you and keep up the good work!!!

Jeri, what were some of the complications that you encountered? I am doing pre-op test now. Is there anything that you wish you knew before the operation that you would tell others? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I wasn't hungry at all for the first few months. At 2 weeks out I didn't really want to eat at all. but I had a reaction to the anesthesia and it took a while to get out of my system. I felt restricted from the start. At this point I have only had 2 fills with only 3cc when the lapband holds about 10cc. I feel restricted if I eat too fast or don't chew.

doesn't it feel funny that you really enjoy going to the gym now? I am 53 and it is amazing to me that I can use the elliptical and treadmill daily plus I have a personal trainer who really pushes me to do my best. I look forward to each meeting with her and I have lost so many inches and sizes since joining in August.

I was banded on December 22 and go for my first fill in February. On Saturday I started the mushy stage and have been having oatmeal, low calorie mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs. Will there be any limitations after teh first fill? Will I be okay to start the regular diet? I am scared that I won't chew enough. I want to do everything right. I am exercising and have lost 15 pounds so far.

it sounds like you are doing well so far. I was nervous with regular food and still stay away from regular bread. I just had to remember to take small bites and chew . I am a "glommer" and ate really fast. I only had problems when I rushed my food. Now I put the fork down between bites. When I had my first fill they told me to eat soft foods for the rest of the day and then back to my normal diet. When I flew after a fill they said to eat nothing on the plane but Water due to cabin pressure. Who knew? But it really is fine and you're off to a good start.

Nakdog, Congrats on the decision. The surgery was really not bad at all. The only complication I had was I had a reaction to the anesthesia and had dry heaves and vomiting for 2 days, so they kept me an extra day. I was nauseous for about 3-4 days but not bad and I was walking on my treadmill -slowly at first- the first day I came home. The actual incisions were easily healed and I only lost 3 days at work, as I had my surgery during Easter vacation and I am a teacher. Keep me posted.

wow good luck Angie! You will do fine. I found things like Jello at first and then Carnation instant Breakfast with skim milk-the instant breakfast is sugar free. it is full of Protein and good! Watch your protein levels as you start eating so you don't lose any hair. I didn't want protein and as a result saw strands coming out. it was only temporary but they said eat meat! I found that I wasn't hungry at all , and felt good , but don't forget to eat. For someone who always wanted to eat all the time, this was a new feeling to me. Good luck and keep me posted. It is the best decision I made. I am now up to 77 lbs. Jeri

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
