Just banded in Roseville, California

Recommended Posts

Hi, just wanted to post a quick introduction. My name is Mercy and I was just banded on February 9th, 2005. My banding BMI was 72. I'm single, don't have any children, and have a job that I truly enjoy. I'm blessed with wonderful family and friends, all who have been supportive of me since I began this journey over 2 years ago.

I'm looking forward to spending some time here.

Mercy

I'm feeling much better actually. When they were first talking about discharging me the next day, I was afraid I wasn't physically ready yet. But I've only felt better and better since I've been home. Maybe they do know what they're doing at the hospital... lol

I don't live in Roseville, I live about 30 min away in West Sacramento. If you've been away from that area for a while, you'd be surprised at how much it's grown now. It's probably one of the fastest growing areas in the Sacramento Metro area. Everything is fancy and new.

Thanks for the well wishes.

Mercy

Congratulations, Mercy! You might get a welcome burst of energy in the next few days; a lot of us get that bonus about 5-10 days after banding. Rest up; please check the food forum if you need suggestions on liquids.< /p>

Hi Mercy,

Welcome and congratulations on your band. I live in the Sacramento area as well... I actually do live in Roseville. I have MedClinic, so I am not familiar with the Sutter doctors, but I heard Dr. Waldrup has a lot of Gastric Bypass experience. Did you have any problems convincing him that you wanted Lapband vs. Gastric Bypass.

I hope you enjoy this site as much as I do. Take care and keep us posted on your progress.

Hi Anne,

I was with Med Clinic for over 20 years. I switched to Sutter so that I could be referred to Dr. Waldrep. Med Clinic initially referred me to UC Davis, but I didn't like how things were progressing, or rather not progressing, with them. Med Clinic then referred me to Drs Machado and Wolfe, but unfortunately, their practice didn't accept my insurance. That's how I came to change medical groups because Waldrep offered lap band, was experienced in high BMI patients like myself, and most importantly, accepted my insurance.

Dr. Waldrep has done over 1000 bypasses, he just recently started doing lap bands back in October. He's always offered it, but until this year, no one has asked for the band. Now it seems there are a few who are asking for it. I wasn't really nervous about his inexperience with the band. I knew he has excellent surgical skills and wasn't intimidated by my BMI of 72, he's done higher BMI's. Dr. Patching at Sutter General will only band up to 58 BMI.

I didn't have trouble convincing Dr. Waldrep that I wanted the band, but, he was extremely thorough in his questions and that I understood about both surgeries, and why I thought the band was better for me. His partner, Dr. Lublin, flat out told me the band wouldn't work on someone my size and postponed my surgery for 4 weeks saying I had to lose weight to prove to him that I could lose weight, and to rethink my decision on the band. When I came back 4 weeks later, I kicked ass and lost 20lbs total. Too bad I didn't see Dr. Lublin that day, I saw Dr. Waldrep and he agreed to do my surgery the following week (last week). Here I sit 5 days later, no complications, placed laparoscopically, ready to go back to work on Tuesday.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
