Happy New Year From Boston!!!

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I'm Candi from Boston, MA USA. 26 years old and overweight my entire life and thrilled to be finally taking control. I was just recently banded 12/27/07! I was so nervous about the surgery and yet so very relieved when the time finally came to just get it over with! It was so quick I thought surely I had woken before they finished or perhaps I was *gasp* unbandable!

Though I am working with a great team of doctors and nutritionist I still have questions about everything...Which surprises me because I considered myself pretty well informed! I hope to meet some great people here to fill in those little gaps where I need extra support. I'm super friendly and love to chat so drop me a line!

See you around the board!

Welcome to bandland. I'm from Norwood, MA. I'd be glad to try to answer any questions you have. I consider myself to be an experienced bandster at this point, but I'm sure I still have alot to learn too.

Happy New Year!

Sue

Nice to meet you Sue! Norwood isn't far from me at all. I'm on the West Roxbury/Dedham line

Well today is my 5th day since surgery...I'm experiencing so much gas and a bit of diarrhea. I'm really hoping it's not the temporary lactose intolerance they talk about! I know the gas part is normal but I shouldn't have diarrhea should I? I've been very strict about my post op diet.

Could I ask where you had yours done?

Mine was done at Faulkner Hospital but my pre-op weight loss groups were at BWH.

Did you do Carnation Instant Breakfast during liquid phase? I'm starting to hate the taste of it! HAHA!

I didn't have diarrhea issues. I suppose though if you've been on all liquids that would make sense. I did the sugar free carnation instant breakfast too. I drank a ton of snapple diet iced tea, but my band being done in July made me want to drink cold stuff anyway. I can remember how tough the post-surgery liquid diet was. Those first mushy foods were the best!

I got my band done at Caritas Norwood Hospital in July. I go to Dr. Adam Glasgow. He's part of a Father and Son team. He's the son. He and his Dad are wonderful. They seem like they genuinely care about their patients. Their office staff is very nice too. They have a monthly support group.

Hope all goes well for you. Remember, take it easy as you're still healing.

Sue

I'm already drooling for some good mushy mashed potatoes! At the same time I'm not really hungry...just tired of the constant sipping. One clear liquid just runs right into the next after a while! Every time a family member makes food it smells 100 times better than it ever has before!

You're so right about needing to remember I'm still on the mend. It catches up with me around the time for my next dose of pain meds. Nothing like a swift reality check to let you know you aren't entirely up to speed!

Take care!

Candi

Drs Glasgow & Glasgow did my surgery, too in December, 2007. Excellent physicians... I noticed a discussion about lactose intolerance which I am experiencing right now... It's making me quite miserable actually! I also read the word "temporary". Does it go away after a while? Practically all I consumed were dairy products for the pre-op prep. & the 1st 3 weeks afterwards. Now I'm stuck as to what to have that does not contain milk products. Lactaid doesn't do a thing... I bought soy milk to prepare mushy mashed potatoes & the like. So far so good w/that. I'm continuing on the liquid/soupy pureed foods a bit longer because my body isn't ready for the next phase yet. (A bit of stomach pain & trouble swallowing.) No big deal but I'm running out of ideas of what to puree!

I don't know what to say about the lactose intollerance. Haven't been there. Have you tried pureeing cream of broccoli Soup made with the soy milk? How about cream of wheat or oatmeal made with the soy milk?

Hope things improve quickly for you.

Sue

thanks im really looking forward to meeting them......I think the band is the right choice for me....my PCP wanted me to go the bypass route...but i dont want to reroute my insides like that...

I have read about everyones sucesss with the lap band and I think its time to give it a try for myself.

The Glasgow drs are my first choice for surgeons. I dont really want to have to drive into Boston for all my appointments and Norwood is not that far from me, plus i have heard great reviews on them.....

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
