I am scheduled to be banded on Jan 7th. I was given no pre op diet, no restrictions at all....i have been saying goodbye to all my favorite foods by eating them, no I am scared i am going to have a liver the size of a small childeek.gif

I have had one appt with the office/dr., and it was super short...watched the video, dr gave me some post op info and paperwork...and that was it....they didnt even weigh me!!!!

I was fine with all this til i have been reading on here....should i put myself on some sort of preop diet....anyone have this same expeirence as me and it was all fine??confused.gif

I don't think I'd go so far as to assume "you'll be fine." There's no way of knowing that unless I could check your liver function through the internet.

But I will say this - I think a lot of it depends on your BMI as to how bad your liver can be. I was just under 37 BMI and didn't have a true pre-op diet aside from 3 days of Clear Liquids pre-op. I did okay, so you may, as well. Again, it most likely depends on your BMI and overall health.

I didn't have any true health problems, so that probably helped, too. Also, I would say that shrinking the liver helps your recovery time. Somebody on here said something about possibly scarring your liver with the tool they use to hold it up with if it is too swollen.

But I went hog-wild for a whole month from the time my surgery was scheduled until my 3-day liquid diet. I ate TERRIBLE things... like Twinkies. :scared: LOL

I was banded last MARCH my dr didn't put me on any preop diet I ate up till the end and don't think that you have to give up all your favs, I miss bread can't eat it at all miss diet coke can't handle that but there are alot of things that I still treat myself to, I am not looking for a mircle, I am happy to lose 2 pds a month and still enjoy some of my favs, I have lost 50 lbs with only 2 fills these dr do so many of these bands its in and out I got so much info from this web site they don't tell you anything the down side to the band and don't hesitate to ask questions to anyone on here no question is to small or to dumb its all learning from others you will find there are certain foods that you can eat but I can't, its scary I was scaried to the last minute Go for it.

My BMI is in the upper 50's. My doctor did not tell me to do a pre-op diet. My surgery is scheduled for January 3rd and I had my pre-op appt today with the surgeon and the nutritionist. I specifically asked if I should be on a pre-op diet for these remaining days. I was told that was not necessary. I certainly don't think it would be a bad idea for you to reign it in a little if you are on a food fest right now. Any change you can make now will probably only be to your benefit at the time of surgery.

You may be wondering if I have selected a reputable surgeon, and I can say that I have. He is the chief of bariatric surgery at Virginia Mason which is a Center of Excellence for bariatric surgery, he has been a surgeon since the early 80's, specializes in laparascopic surgery and has an excellent reputation at the clinic where he works.

I commented to the nutritionist today that it's odd the drastic differences all the doctors have for pre & post-op diets.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
