Banded Today and Have a Question

Recommended Posts

I was banded this morning and am home. The only pain is around my port area, and its not really that bad. Haven't experienced the gas pains (yet!).

I have a question about the post-op liquid diet. I had bought some Dannon Light and Fit smoothies (sugar free, etc.) I had never had them before. I had about a 1/3 of the bottle shortly after I came home from the hospital. It seemed ok - no seeds or chunks of fruit. Then I opened up a 2nd bottle, and had a few sips and it had seeds and very small chunks. I want to make sure that I didn't do anything bad to my pouch. Does anyone know?

Also, totally forgot about the no drinking water! I didn't drink while eating, but forgot about the 30 minutes before/after. My throat is so dry and a little sore from the breathing tube, so i've been trying to drink as much Water as I can today.

Has anyone else had this experience?

Thanks!

First of all, you don't have to worry about drinking Water until you are eating solids. Right now you should be drinking Water fairly frequently. At least for my doctor, the rule wasn't "no drinking water", it is "no liquids while eating a meal" so that you don't wash down your food. At this point you should just be drinking liquids anyway, I would think, so the warning against liquids is irrelevant.

All that said, every doctor has different rules, so while I am familiar with mine, I can't know what yours told you. If you have questions, call your surgeon's office and get advice. Otherwise we can just tell you our own surgeon's advice, which may be different from yours.

Hi! Hope you are doing ok---I wasn't allowed anything but Clear Liquids for a week after my surgery, so I

don't know if you messed up or not. After reading what other people have had to say,I wonder if my dr. is over cautious. I was told to drink SlimFast, but that was the only other thing I could have.

If your doc said liquids only the first so many days I personally would not "eat" the dannons again . Its probably not going to hurt anything to have one. But I woudl not have any more. Liquids mean liquids . So I would just try to stick with that from now on . Like others said if you have any questions the best thing to do is ask your doc, each of our docs have different advice to follow so its best to ask your doc .

Take a deep breath!!! You are doing fine. I am sure that you have not damaged your pouch. Put away the dannons for a week or 2 and stick with straight liquids. The reason we don't drink with our food is so it doesn't get washed down too quickly. This is really not an issue while you are on liquids. Reread your diet instructions, get a good night sleep and remember you will be sore in the morning, don't try to get up or even sit up too fast. Take your time. Enjoy your New year!</p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
