Any Last Minute Advice.....

Recommended Posts

Finally, I have saved up enough to have the surgery and am scheduled next week on the 4th :clap2:. I have told many people I will be having the surgery, and am suprized at how many people also, have had it. They tell me of their weight loss and I am most encouraged. Anything else to tell me that perhaps,

you wish someone else had mentioned to you?

Thanks All.

Is that I had a hiatel hernia that needed to be fixed before they could do the surgery. They fixed it during the lap band procedure but I am a little more sore from it. I was banded on the 28th and today I feel pretty good. Do not judge your first day by wht you will feel like. My first day was perty miserable but I perked up pretty fast by day 2. Good luck!!

Make sure you follow the doctor's diet to a tee. The first 6 weeks are crucial to heal. Don't go on solids too soon. Eat creamy Soups if you get really hungry. Julie

I was banded on the 19th...I have had a rough road honestly...which SHOCKED me. I usually recover from things well and I am fairly young with a lower BMI...I am finely just feeling well enough to want to go out today! So my only advice is to take it slow and don't be disappointed if it takes longer than u assumed.

I wish I had known about the possibility of "productive farting." I'm glad that I was home for that terribly mortifying experience. My suggestion for the first week post-op: When you feel the need to pass gas, make your way to the bathroom like you would if you needed to go number two.

To relax!! and not be terrified of all the worry-warts who post all the wierd might be issues. I had my band on Friday afternoon--before I was so nervous and anxious because of everything I had read----Now I feel like a fool for being so nervous.

I'm not sure if you are a fertile female, but I wish they had let me know that the surgery can make you have your period & the blood thinner can make your period come on heavy in the operating room! It was a little embarassing to be cleaned up afterward!

Anyalee -

Thanks for the info I am actually supposed to start my period the day of my surgery. I will attempt to take any and all necessary steps to deal with the surgery/blood thinner.

Everything went fine for me. I am 5 days post op. I too was self pay.My biggest fear was that I would do something wrong following surgery and wind up in there again, paying again. Just follow doc's rules to a tee. I would do it again in a heart beat. I already love my band. Good luck to you.!!!

Your doctor won't probably tell you...but EXPECT a voracious hunger to descend on you anywhere from a few days to a week or so after surgery. You will feel really hungry. Don't freak. Don't worry. Feed that hunger with your liquids...and keep it at bay with Proteins. Don't worry about losing weight right after surgery. Your band won't work correctly until you have adequate restriction....having the band and having restriction do not necessarily go hand in hand initially. The main thing is keep strictly to your doctor's orders of what and what not to ingest. You have the rest of your life to eat...4 weeks of liquids and mushies is NOTHING. Don't fight the process....expect it, embrace it and flow with it.

Congrats!

I am 5 days post-op and I will be honest: this is the first day that I dont feel like punching anyone in sight! I am young, and really thought I would bounce right back in a day or two, but it really took me until day 5 to 'feel great.'

Follow the dr. orders and baby yourself! Get someone to help you around the house and drive you around, etc. for the first four days. That helped tremendously! Tracey

A friend who had bypass suggested I bring Chapstick with me. OMG, thank goodness she said that. It was the best advice ever! After surgery you will be parched!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oops, I almost forgot. Did you all eat more than three times a day while recovering? I was told I might be quite hungry and that I shouldn't be focusing on weight loss at first?

Congrads on the surgery date. I also self pay. take it slow and follow the diet exactly. the first six weeks is for healing. i felt good 2 days after. but stick to your diet. very important for healing. the only advise i can give you is i experienced alot of Constipation. alot of us dont talk about that. but oh my mine was bad. wish i knew what i could of done to prevent it getting that bad. The gas pain that ended up in my shoulder blades was very unconfortable. that goes away in a couple of weeks. walking helps that. Good luck to you and dont be scared. all of us on this site has gotton through it. we are all different and you two will be posting your experience. good luck and welcome to band land. keep us all posted.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
