Drinking before meals

Recommended Posts

I certainly understand why we shouldn't drink during a meal or for a certain period after the meal. But I'm curious why many also have a rule against drinking before the meal. Wouldn't the liquid pass right through and be gone before the food arrived so there wouldn't be any risk of the liquid washing the food down? What am I missing?

Longhorn, the RN that runs the Bariatrics program at the hospital told me that they use to have you stop before you eat. Now she said you can drink up until your meal. I do without a problem. Julie

I'm not sure why that is ever told to anyone.....makes no sense because the liquids so right straight through - if you have ever had a flouroscope like a lapbander does regularly, you can see just how fast it shoots on through.

I have no idea. I've wondered about that. But I was told by my Dr's office to not drink for 30 mins before. I have no idea! I can certainly ask. They LOVE when I come in with questions that obviously most people don't ask - they seem to get a bit overwhelmed by my questions. LOL

Yes, waiting to drink after the meal seems very effective!

Its so difficult to get the timing right on the drinking Water. I can wait an hour after, but it's just too hard to do, with the half-hour before and the hour after. I'm glad to hear this from you all. It will ease my mind that I'm getting this right, at least from the liquids perspective.

I know it's getting a bit redundant, but I'll throw my 2 cents in too. My doc wants me to drink a tall glass of a non caloric beverage right before I eat, to aid in helping me feel full, and for good hydration. And then wait until 30 minutes after a meal to resume drinking.

This is crazy! I wonder why some require waiting before eating and others do not. I'm going to ask at my next appt because I would love to drink something before I eat.

Mine said to wait 30 minutes before eating and 30-60 minutes after eating.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
