Any tennis players out there? When were you able to play again post-op?

Recommended Posts

Hi! I am scheduled to get banded on 1/10 (yeah!). I play tennis year round, about 2-3 X per week. I am trying to guess when I may be able to play again after surgery. I play doubles, which is a little less strenuous than singles. Also, I am not telling my entire tennis team about my surgery. I am the captain, and am trying to figure out how to explain my absence to them. I hate to lie, but once I tell my tennis team, my entire community will know, and I am definitely not up for that. Any suggestions on how to explain my temporary 'hiatus'?:nervous

Hi there citygirl ,

I went back to tennis 2 1/2 to 3 weeks later and i play doubles also. It felt fine i still ran around the court i was just careful with stretching up to serve as that was a little different but otherwise all ok i think i could of gone back 2 weeks after without a problem.

hope this helps

I play as well and was playing doubles 4 weeks out. I did not tell anyone - just said that I had a "procedure" and that I needed to take it easy. Most people just say things like "Are you OK?"

I never took the bait, just answered, "I am fine thanks" and that was that. Still just my husband, mother and a close friend are the only ones who know.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
