Hi-Sue. I was wondering if anyone else out there from around here. It seems like my doc does a lot but I haven't run into anyone besides me and the hubby. We actually had a visit with him today and Rich needed to get a fill-actually his first one to find out after thinking he had three others. He was missing the port. Don't let that scare you though. He did mine and I have lost 25 pounds since my fill. which was in February. I am down from 280 to 245. Don't get discourage as you really don't lose to much weight until you get a fill. We live in Bruce SD and work in Brookings. Hope to hear back from you and Good luck!

Lara, I'm from North Dakota and still in the planning stage. How long has your dr been doing lap band? Had he done alot of them before yours? The dr here in Bismarck just started doing lap band in March and I'm looking for others who were initial patients of drs. Thanks for any info. Celeste

Celeste- I guess I was bad about not looking into my surgeon to well. I was referred to him by my Baratric doctor whom I had been seeing for around 4 years. He has used the Surgical Institute Surgeons fof many of his WLS patients. I did send my husband to have his first before I did mine. Just to be sure :). He does have a hard time finding the port, but is very good about sticking to it until he gets a fill in. We infact had an appt. last week and I have not needed anymore adjustments since Feb and I am down over 30 pounds since the initial surgery. I'm doing about 2 pounds a week. So are you going to be his first? I think I heard my doc say they need a procter in the room when they do the first few surgeries. Let me know if youhave other questions. It is the best thing I have done for myself! Good Luck!

Larae

Pam-You are doing great! I also got your post from about Dakotacare-they are great. Watch how your surgeon code your fills-if they code them as obesity-Dakotacare may not pay them-just depends on your plan. Mine and the DH doesn't cover for obesity, but will for other medical conditions, which I constantly have to have our surgeon resend in our claims. I have still only had one fill and down 53 pounds since Dec. The Dh has had 2 fills that have went in and he is down around 30-I think he needs to go in again-but he is a man and stubborn. I love Mithcell-my neice got married there last summer and another neice goes to Dakota Weslyan. Best wishes on the rest of your new life-I would not change my banding for anything!

Hey fellow South Dakotians! I live near Watertown. I was banded in Sioux Falls by Dr. Peter O'Brien last week on Aug. 16. I was feeling great and went back to work today 8/21 (I am a teacher so it's not a real strenuous job). My dr. has done over 200 surgeries. I hope you all keep doing great! I have to go back this Wed. to Sioux Falls to have my staples removed, so I will get my "official weight" then. So far by weighing myself at home I have lost 10 lbs, better than nothing!

Hi Spunky welcome to our circle of South Dakotan bandsters! It is always good to know you aren't alone is this battle. I have reached a plateau nothing gained or lost since august 12th. I wont get my first fill till Spetember 14th. Dr. Reynolds said I am doing everything right, just relax, finish healing & keep up the good work.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
