cancer treatment (or other surgeries) and the band!

Recommended Posts

Hi, all - I'm eager to hear what anyone's experience is with being a cancer survivor and getting the band. When were you treated for cancer? How long did you wait after treatment to get the band? Has anyone experienced a recurrence while having the band, and if so, did you have a band removal?

I've recently been diagnosed with a reproductive cancer and had a full hysterectomy. I may or may not have some radiation treatments, but after that, I'll be done with treatment, and seem to be doing really well. I'm trying to figure out how long I should wait before getting the band, which I had been planning for many months before the diagnosis. After this health crisis, it seems clearer than ever to me that I want to take charge of my health and my body as soon as possible!

Also: if you are NOT a cancer survivor, but had other major surgeries or medical treatments, how long did you wait afterwards before getting the band? Any other thoughts?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I do not have cancer but I did have my rotator cuff repaired in April. I made sure they knew all about my band but it was never an issue. The only problem I had was that the pain meds gave me a really irritated stomach lining that lasted and got worse...to where now I am totally unfilled for 3-4 weeks while I heal up. It was an instant cure, tho, to get all the Fluid out. I feel great now!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
