20-30 grams of protein

Recommended Posts

I just thought I'd post something here that I didn't know until I dug on the other forums.

Our bodies can only process 20 - 30 grams of Protein at one time. I was hunting for good stuff to buy so that I could get my 100g per day (which at this point is a pipe dream) and found some great stuff with 45 - 50 g and thought that was the magic stuff. Well, if I drink that, then half of it is wasted and just gets processed out I guess. So even though I would get the grams I would only process half of the needed amount and be falling behind.

I wish my dietician would have told me that. :omg: I asked the health teacher at school and he confirmed it. So, buyer beware....more is not necessarily better.

did your dieticians tell you that?

Steph

The biggest Protein myth is that you can only digest 30 grams of Protein at one time. Find out what's wrong with this belief and just how much protein you need. This is a common question. I also get variations such as, how much protein can you digest at one time?

There are two ways to answer this, because there really two questions being asked.

1) How much protein can the digestive system physically absorb into the bloodstream from a meal?

And the MORE IMPORTANT QUESTION...

2) How much protein can you body actually utilize?

The answers...

1) About 95% and higher, unless you have some type of digestive system malfunction.

So if you get convinced by supplement companies to drink a 42g Protein shake in 5 minutes, you'll still probably absorb at 38 or more grams of that protein.

Your muscle growth is not limited by the amount of protein you can DIGEST or ABSORB.

Your muscle growth IS LIMITED by the amount of protein that your body can utilize for protein synthesis.

So the answer to #2...

2) A lot less than you think.

You really don't need 40, or 30, or probably even 20g of protein per meal to keep your protein synthesis humming along. See Nutrition Help Expert Brad Pilon's post on "How Much Protein Do We Really Need"

Any protein that your body can't use for growth will be shuttled into a process where it is broken down (de-aminated: meaning the nitrogen is removed from the molecule and it becomes a carbon skeleton) to be used in energy pathways.

Now, there are benefits for eating extra protein (in my opinion) when dieting, mainly that it helps to suppress appetite.

But the bottom line to the question I am asked almost everyday is...

a) Your body can digest and absorb almost all of the protein you eat without problem.

:) Your muscles can only do so much with protein...the muscle growth process is RARELY, if ever limited by the amount of protein we consume. Almost all of us can easily get enough protein for maximum muscle growth without the need for eating 50g of protein 6 times per day. Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler, and Gunter Schlerkcamp excluded, of course.

Overall, I'd think twice about the need to slam down a 40-50g protein shake...just think of the children and puppies you'll save by not gassing them out with protein farts.

Real food should cover all your protein needs.

Yikes, you are trying to get 100 in a day? Im suppose to go for 40-60 a day. I can do the 40 by drinking 3-4 of my Protein shakes/soups

( PrescriptFit shakes and Soups )

If i double up 2 scoops at Breakfast and 2 scoops at lunch and a sensible dinner then the skakes definitely cover my Protein and dinner is just bonus protein.

100 seems like it would be too much for me to try at this point.

I double up on my Protein too. In the am and before bed I have 8 oz of Water with one unflavored and one chocholate package.

Since I've been doing this I feel less hungury in the morning and I sleep better.

Ach, my big struggle is Protein.

The nutritionist told me 40-60 per day, with an average of 50. I might get half of that. I'm just not doing well with the Protein shakes.

Now that I'm starting to be able to eat though, I think it will get a little better. I just calculated - I had a little less than 1/4 of a 3 egg cheese omelet for Breakfast, so there's 10 Proteins right there.

Is this product something that you could use throughout the day. I like to use Isopure - but dilute it over ice and drink it throughout the day. That is when I am not waiting before and after meals.

I too am having a very hard time getting in my protein! I just can't drink anymore Protein drinks and with the little bit I can eat, it isn't adding up to 60 grams! I still have a hard time eating more than a tablespoon or 2 of soft food but I have lost 10 lbs!!!:whoo:

Hopefully it gets better before I develop problems from lack of protein in my system!

Good luck to you,

Lisa

I drink my Protein in the morning. Then I eat my soft foods. If I cant eat much thru the day I will have a shake before bed too. that way I know I have 28 grams in the morning (over a 3 hour period) and 28 grams at night.

I drink mine at work and it takes me a while to drink it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
