Mushie Stage

Here is another thought for blended foods.

I bought premade turkey in gravey in the meat department near. It was right next to the premade mash potato's. I grabbed a container of each. Begrudgenly, I came home and blended the turkey breast and gravy. I bought a bunch of 6 oz containers. I put a scoop of mashed potatos on the bottom and a scopp of the pureed turket on top. This made about 6 meals. It was AWESOME. Thanksgiving dinner. :-)

I also made my meals for the week. I have everything measured out and ready. I find that I am not hungry and have been keeping myself very busy. If I don't plan my meal times I forget and then have to wait 1/2 cause I just had water! And by this time I am hungry. Now everything is at my fingertips. I think I am going to do this every week!!!!

But try the pre-made turkey its good. I may try the pot roast next. I cant believe I am liking pureed meat!

That is a great idea! I might just have to try that myself. I think I can handle pureed meat if I think it's just gravy on my potatoes!

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

I just want to add my two cents about the salsa. I am also a big salsa lover but since the band I usually need ant-acids when I eat salsa. Don't know why but I wanted to warn anyone that may end up with this same experience. I love refried Beans with melted cheese too like the above people said. It's yummy and very filling with Protein too!

I haven't had trouble with the salsa but then my doctor has me on Pepcid AC twice a day for 6 months. Just part of his after-care instructions.

OMG folks, did you all know you can make omelets in a freezer bag and boiling them? I did it for my class for our Christmas Party. Paula Deen does them (yeah yeah yeah, I know, she's the queen of fat) but, they really do work... You just put your egg and toppings in the (HAS TO BE A FREEZER BAG) and smoosh it together. Then fix a big pot of boiling Water and drop it in... SO, watch it for 5-6 minutes. You avoid the fat from butter and milk and it makes a lovely omelet.

I too, am a big SALSA fan. I put it on tons of stuff.

I also go to Panera a lot and get the low fat chicken noodle, broccoli Soup and puree it when I get home.

Another idea was I made low fat, crust-less quiche w/ chopped mushrooms and broccoli. I put them in metal cupcake tins and baked them and froze them (they are about 2 oz a piece).

I also made vegetable Soup and froze them in 2 oz containers to take to school w/ me.

I love tuna, but I've never been much of a mayo or miracle whip tuna girl. I make it w/ Grey Poupon or spicy mustard. It lowers the fat dramatically, compared to regular tuna.

I also chop green Beans regularly. I also ADORE black Beans, pinto beans and great northern beans. Salsa or chow-chow great pureed in w/ those.

My 'treat' has been low-fat, low sugar orange sherbet. YUM!!!

I loved hummus during this stage.

I had garlic hummus last night for dinner...I was a very happy Trixie!

Yesterday was my first day of mushies. It was a bittersweet day to say the least. I made myself a scrambled egg with skim milk and a 1/4 of an ounce of cheddar, mashed up a 1/4 of a cup of no sugar added diced peaches, and sat down to enjoy my feast. I could only get half of the egg down! Same thing happened at lunch. I made myself some refried Beans with a couple of tablespoons of low sodium chicken broth to thin it out in the blender, added some pureed salsa, cheddar, and low fat sour cream on top, and again only half made it's way down the hatch. I'm happy that I don't have to prepare anything for today's meals and that I'm not overeating, but geez, this head hunger is a drag!

Today is my first official day on mushies. Yesterday as a treat I had a mushie dinner (I took the idea above and had a pureed Thanksgiving meal of turkey/gravy and mashed potatoes.) Total serving size was 1 cup and after eating it I was so delightfully full for about 5 hours. It saw me through my son's birthday party/New Years Eve party and I had no interest in any of the food sitting out on my counters... including the ginormous cupcakes I bought him from costco.

Today I'm easing into mushies with a half liquid/mushie diet. I just had a bowl of Weight Control oatmeal made with milk and will have another Thanksgiving special for dinner.

My biggest hurdle will be getting through the final family Christmas dinner I'm going to in an hour... I am not looking forward to it at all... it's so much easier to do this when I don't have to sit and watch everyone else eat things I wish I could be eating...

I'm amazed you all are getting so much down... I can only eat 2 oz or 1/4 cup at a time. Of course, I had some other issues... my stomach was in my chest cavity, they cut my diaphragm and moved my stomach down to where it was supposed to be. And, my surgeon told me that I had a 'long, skinny' stomach (go figure, huh?). Anyway, I have a 4cc band... My 'pouch' is smaller than a golf ball. I honestly feel FULL after 2 oz. Like I said, I found it so interesting that we all can eat so many different amounts!

I had a great New Years. I had a piece of Tiliapia that I ground in my little chopper. It was HEAVENLY! I also sneaked a little piece of crab from my hubby and chopped it up. YUM!

That's about how much I can manage right now, too. I'm starting to figure out my "soft stop", ie., when I'm full but not too full. The only concern I have is meeting Protein goals with this little food, but I suppose a few weeks won't hurt.

My nutritionist and my surgeon both recommend to "stop eating when you don't feel hungry any more"... That mentality has helped me quite a bit.

It's pretty important to have Protein to help you heal and to keep your body from burning muscle for the protein it needs. Have you tried adding a Protein Drink in between meals to help supplement your protein intake?

When I'm "full," if that's what it's called, I feel like I have to burp, but nothing will come out. Has anyone else experienced this feeling? How do the rest of you know when it's time to push the plate away?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
