Hello there!

My name is Heather, and I'm in the pre-op stage. I did A TON of research on the internet before I even mentioned it to anyone. I guess I was just ashamed that so much of my weight issues have to do with bad habits, etc, and I was afraid that if I told people that I was considering surgery, they would think that I thought it would be a "quick fix" or an "easy answer" and that I thought that I wouldn't have to make any of the changes that are necessary for "normal" weight loss. (By the way, I don't view it as a "quick fix" or an "easy answer", and I know that my entire life in relation to food will be turned upside down!) Anyway, after much research, I decided that I could only collect so much info on the web, and it was time to talk to an "expert" about it.

My husband has been awesome! He went with me to my initial consultation for the surgery, not only to support me, but because he has questions too! He's been trying to gather up as much info as I have; while I am the one having the surgery, he views it as "WE are having the surgery". We're in this together! (Isn't he awesome!)

Anyway, I've got a psych evaluation scheduled for 9/15 (my husband is getting so much mileage out of the fact that a medical professional told me to get a psych eval! LOL). I'm also scheduled to go in for a sleep study on 9/22. I have three small children, and I have to admit that I'm looking forward to the sleep study just because I'll be able to sleep all night long without any little bodies climbing into my bed! LOL My surgeon hasn't set the exact date yet, but he's shooting for mid-October.

So, that's me. I'm glad that I found you guys, and I'm looking forward to getting to know you!

Hi Heather, welcome!! You're a very lucky woman to have such a supportive husband--I know, because I have one too. He didn't start out that way, I have to say; it took some time for him to get over his innate fear of surgery.

Your daughter is beautiful! I have two small kids myself and I'm doing this for them more than anything else. I can't wait until chasing them down the block is a reality instead of a reason to call the paramedics. :D

Good luck with your evals and sleep test. Keep us posted!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
