How much in ounces am I supposed to be eating after bypass

Recommended Posts

I'm kind of confused on how much I should be eating at this point? I don't want to over eat.

It's probably best to discuss your dietary needs with your surgical team as every plan is different. Also, believe it or not, the size surgeons make pouches after surgery is not standardized. The point is they know best what's appropriate for you.

I'll add that weight is not really a good way to measure your food this soon after surgery and most plans will provide amounts by volume (such as 1/2 a cup). The reason is that your stomach does not care how much something weighs, all it knows is if the amount of food you ate will fit inside or not.

Later, there will come a time when you might start weighing food, but that's not something you really need to worry about yet.

I agree it’s more of a volume consideration than mass. Also agree with checking in with your team for their recommendations, I was advised 1/4-1/3 cup from purée slowly increasing to about a cup at 6 months. That was pretty much all I could manage too. That was me. You could be very different. I never considered the actually weight of what I ate until I was in maintenance and working how much I needed to eat though I know some are given weights from early on.

What does your plan say and what in that is concerning you?

From your profile you're less than 3 weeks post op - is that right?

I have a sleeve not a bypass but at that stage it was more about sticking rigidly to my surgeon's plan than measuring anything. I was happy to get in my Protein Shakes and fluids. Everything else came much later.

I hope you are doing well, not worrying too much, and get the maximum benefit from your surgery.
