Pre surgery liquid diet

Check the salt content in the Bone Broth as this can cause Water retention

V8 is medium high for salt, so I would think the occasional glass would probably be OK. Have you been given any guidance by your doctor on what you can have as part of your liquid diet? Requirements seem to differ from doctor to doctor, never mind country to country! In the UK it’s referred to as a liver reduction diet as it’s supposed to help the surgeon. If we use just a liquid diet with my hospital, it’s recommended that something like Slimfast/meal replacement shakes are used.

Sorry I can’t be of any more help, hopefully others will be able to give you more guidance

Like you, I've been following the pre-op exactly. I'm on day 7 and the scale finally dropped by 6 lbs. I didn't change anything that I've been doing which has me assuming it was all Water retention.

Have you tried Protein Water? I use one here that’s 10g per 500ml and is easy to get down. I’m sure there will be something similar where you live. Can you mix some Protein Powder with your milk? That would be protein from milk and also from the powder. Can you get low salt bouillon? I know it’s difficult but hopefully the next few days flyby for you and Monday will be here soon enough.

Good luck!

I would avoid the V8 juice because of its low Protein content. You need to get your protein in even before surgery (it’s good practice for after surgery too). Why waste those calories on something that won’t benefit your protein intake?

You are consuming a lot of fluids which can be adding to any Water retention you are experiencing too. Are you peeing a lot more? Give it a few more days for your body to get used to the low calorie, all Fluid diet before worrying about the scales.

All the best with your surgery. Exciting!!

I didn’t loose any weight with the liquid diet because I had already been following the bariatric plan for a whole year before the surgery so my body was used to being calorie restricted. The salt levels sound kind of high… like others have said. Don’t be surprised if you gain weight while in hospital because the IV fluids are full of salt too. Just keep drinking Water and it will come off. Best of luck with your recovery!

I have 8 days to go until my GS and am beginning to really struggle with headaches, tension, dizzyness and flushes. I have called the NHS hospital that I going to's bariatric ward, but no response to my message...

I am really finding 2 litres of milk a day + 1 litre of Water (coffee!) hard. I never drank much before and this is a quantum shift for me, never mind the grumbly tummy

The first week of the pre surgical diet is hard @Skewiff especially when it’s as restricted as yours. Much of what you’re experiencing is withdrawals from carbs, sugar, caffeine (though you said you’re drinking coffee which is unusual). Not being able to eat solid food adds to the challenge as your cravings (for textures like crunch, flavours like salty or sweet and for specific foods) are still there. The second week is always easier.

And after the surgery when you’re still on the liquid diet, you won’t be all that interested in eating or food.

All the best with your surgery.

Dropping into ketogenesis you will go through a “keto flu” which is different for everyone, but sweats, nausea, body aches/muscle aches, fatigue and headache are common for those. It often hits between day 3-7, but everyone is different. Salt here helps. Dig out your electrolyte drinks, your salty broth, etc. with the coffee drinking you’re just adding insult to injury, losing a lot of Water that way. Though withdrawal is a jerk.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
