They’re pretty strong. If they failed easily after surgery from simply straining while pooping or coughing they wouldn’t use them for any surgery. If they fail you’d have to have done something much more strenuous to your abdominal/upper digestive area or put a lot of strain on your tummy. If you follow the staged return to eating, not lift anything heavy before you’re allowed & don’t do any strenuous or jerking activities, you should be fine.

Staple failures are very rare.

Don't let it get to that point, if you can help it. Make sure you have plenty of fluids, Fiber, and Miralax. In the very beginning, I needed Miralax in the morning and a stool softener/laxative combo at night. I did that for the first 6 weeks, then I was able to just use the Miralax everyday. But the last thing you want, especially in the first 6 weeks, is to be straining. The staples will be fine, but it's the healing from the surgery and the pain the straining can cause that you want to avoid.

I am
Having Miralax once a day but haven’t had an urge to go since four days - what was the night combo you used?

I used this, and took 4 each night:

Also, some people find it helpful to hold a pillow against their abdomen when coughing to offer a little support. Worth a try.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
