The Golden Compass or Enchanted?

We always go to the movies on Christmas Day and are having a hard time deciding what to see. It's my husband and me, both 52, and two of our daughters, both 26, and their husbands, 26 and 31. We don't want to see anything violent or depressing or inane.

It seems that the choices are The Golden Compass or Enchanted. The reviews have been kind of split on The Golden Compass but they're pretty good for Enchanted. The guys seem less enthused about Enchanted, though we girls want to see it eventually.

Any suggestions? Is The Golden Compass better than its reviews? Is Enchanted too much of a kid movie or would the guys like it? Is there something else we're missing? (We also considered Atonement and Charlie Wilson's War.)

Thanks for your help! :clap2:

saw enchanted last night with my hubby and little girls and he thought it was retarded at first and then i saw him almost crying! He liked it, though he would never admit it. I say enchanted all the way! Golden compass has a lot of controversy surrounding it I guess, something about killing God, not sure if it's true or not.

We're going to see The Golden Compass because my daughter and I have both read the books and are fantasy freaks. Atonement sounds like a downer to me, especially for Christmas. I've read good reviews for Enchanted; and Juno is supposed to be wonderful. I guess Sweeney Todd isn't really a Christmas movie, now, is it?? I'd probably vote for Juno as the best movie out right now.

Well, we've decided on Enchanted and have already bought the tickets in advance. We're going to the Alamo Drafthouse, which is a dinner theater, and they're having a special turkey dinner tomorrow, including leftovers! So it should be fun for the six of us.

Thanks for the advice! I'd still like to see The Golden Compass eventually.

Sweethot...It wasn't about killing God. It was that God does not exist and people are responsible for their own evildoing. It's a concept that scares a lot of people.

My vote is for either Enchanted (which my daughter and grand-daughter have seen) or The Great Debater. Should be a feel good movie. Anything with Denzel has got to be good!

Just got back a little while ago from seeing Enchanted. Out of the six of us, five us really enjoyed it. The other was neutral. There was lots of laughing from us and the rest of the audience. I wouldn't say that we were overwhelmed or anything but we did enjoy our outing and I do recommend the movie. Thanks for all the comments!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
