My surgery is June 24th, and I am very nervous. My spouse had the same surgery May 8th and did amazing. Can someone please give me some words of encouragement? Also, my spouse loved Protein Shakes and after having the gastric sleeve, she cannot stand the smell or taste of them at all... Anyone had that issue post-op?

Hi and welcome! The only thing that makes me feel like that post op is Soups. My first ‘meal’ post op was cream of Tomato Soup and I now cannot stand the thought of it, makes me feel nauseous at even the thought of any soups. Protein Shakes I still like though.

Good luck with your surgery :)

Hi! I had my surgery yesterday! Everything went well. Yesterday was probably the worst as I was so loopy and tired from the anesthesia and also very sore. Today I’ve been able to sit up in a chair all day. Not having any issues getting my liquids in!

I'm scheduled for gastric bypass this Wednesday the 19th so the liver shrink diet has been tough for me alot of fatigue and dizziness, and start 48 hr all liquid tomorrow morning. Never been this weak before but I look forward to this as part for reclaiming my overall health and wellness! Prayers going out to all my fellow patients, 1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your cares upon him for he cares for you...

I'm day 3 post op ,The procedure went good no issues as of yet. Honestly the first 48 hours were the worst for discomfort and pain ,Today Iam up and moving around more and been sitting upright all day and really beginning to take more fluids in today still get stomach cramps periodically especially if I try to push fluids to quick, I've been able to tolerate Water, protien drinks and tomatoe juice. not to give to much (TMI) but definitely have issues with diarrhea started this morning but overall feeling pretty good

Is anyone wearing a compression garment for their belly? If I hold my stomach, any pain I might have is less than when I walk without holding it. I’m not sure what the pros or cons of getting one would be. Getting off the couch/chair is tough but it’s the worst if I dropped something in the floor!

My program gave me An abdominal binder with a Velcro close to tighten as I wajted

Wearing it snug for the first five days helped me ommeneely

just allow some airtime to allow sweat to dry

I don't know if you really want to know how it went, but here I go. I'm still in the hospital and expected to be here until at least tomorrow. Surgery didn't go well--my surgeon nipped my lung sac and had to suture it up. The anesthesiologist gave me too much narcotics, I was 'lucky to be alive,' as one of the nurses told me in the recovery room. Now an investigation has been opened on what happened during this surgery. I'm definitely not posting this to scare anyone, but this is my reality and would never lie and say everything went swimmingly when it didn't. But I'm lucky to be alive folks, right?? And even with all this bullsh*t, I'm optimistic for the future. I'm excited for my journey and now this surgery is over, the only way I can go is forward. Good luck all and love sharing our journeys together.

So sorry this happened to you! Sending good vibes for a speedy recovery, and much smoother journey going forward!

Hello! I'm new to the group. I just had surgery on the 17th. I'm really struggling to stick to liquid diet until cleared by surgeon. Husband has been super supportive with broths and other liquid diet adhered menu options as he cooks dinner for the household. Next check in with doctor is Tuesday and I hope he gives the clear for pureed foods so I can at least stop feeling like I'm on empty constantly.

We're surgery twins!

Well you're not alone. I've been struggling with my Protein goals. I started putting ice cubes in a cup (filling the cup with ice cubes) and drinking my Protein Shake thus way. It's helping. I'm also feeling super hungry. I just want to chew something! Lol

I had my surgery on the 19th of June and I'm having the same issue. I have been following the full liquid diet religiously but doesn't seem like enough. I go to my first follow up this Wednesday, the 26th, and I definitely will be asking the doctor what are my options. I do feel I'm ready to advance to soft foods but I'll wait to see what the doctor says.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
